Cachao : Cuban music in jam session

Double bassist and composer Cachao Lopez was one of the greatest personalities in the history of Cuban music. A true innovator who already in the '40s pioneered a new exciting form of dance music subsequently worldwide known as mambo. 'Cuban Music In Jam Session' stands as one of his classic albums from the late '50s. A great example of Cachao's innovative jam sessions called "descargas" where various legendary musicians such as tenor sax player Emilio Penalver and trumpeters Armando "Chocolate" Armenteros and Alejandro "Negro" Vivar, improvise over highly infectious grooves and rhythms laid down by Cachao himself on bass and a bunch of super tight percussionists. A great statement from the latin music golden era!

This is an album that takes you on a supernatural journey to the discovery of ancient sounds that move our souls in the deepest of manners. Veronique Chalot was born in Normandy in the north of France, but it was in Paris that she first became interested in traditional French folk music. In 1974 she landed in Rome where she soon earned a small, but dedicated following. In 1979 she recorded her first studio effort, 'J'ai Vu Le Loup,' for the Italian Materiali Sonori label. Over the past 30+ years she has given hundreds of concerts, presenting her repertoire of traditional French/Italian folk songs and building awareness of that fascinating patrimony of antique melodies and dance rhythms. She passed away unfortunately on the 3rd of July 2021.

Brazilian poet, lyricist, essayist and playwright, Vinicius de Moraes (1913-1980) became a seminal figure in modern Brazilian music and literature. Along with his longtime collaborator, composer, arranger, singer, and pianist/guitarist Antonio Carlos Jobim (1927-1994), known in Brazil as Tom Jobim, he composed hundreds of songs which have become true classics and have transcended the bossa nova, as they continue to be played and recorded by countless singers and instrumentalists within Brazil and throughout the world. The band recorded 'The Province' for the first time, four newly arranged tracks of previously released material, and five tracks recorded live at Real World Studios in front of a live audience. 'In The Ley Lines' gives fans a chance to hear Dengue Fever like never before. The quality of the recordings is cleaner, crisper, and contains the only studio version of 'Doo Wop (Today I Learnt To Drink),' plus live versions of fan favorites 'Sober Driver,' 'New Years Eve,' and a rocking six-and-a-half minute live performance of 'One Thousand Tears Of A Tarantula.' Dobranotch : Vander ikh mir lustik

2023 was not an easy year for Dobranotch, the Klezmer band from Saint Petersburg: After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, part of the ensemble left the country and settled in exile in Germany. It was not an easy decision for the musicians. "We left behind family, friends, and fans without the certainty of ever seeing them again," writes the band. Half of the members remained in Russia. Now, Dobranotch presents another album, 'Vander Ikh Mir Lustik,' which was recorded in Germany with a new lineup. An additional instrument has been added: alongside the violin, clarinet, saxophone, banjo, tuba, and drums, a dulcimer now finds its deserved place on stage. With this album, Dobranotch emphasizes their roots and impresses with a lively mix of Jewish, Moldavian, Russian, Roma, Caucasian, Ukrainian, and Serbian traditional melodies and songs in Yiddish and Russian. A special feature is the Klezmer version of the US classic 'In The Pines,' which recalls the blues background of bandleader Mitia Khramtsov. Dobranotch also loves to experiment: in the song 'Skotchne,' they integrate drum & bass elements into their Klezmer sounds.

On a part with Tlahoun Gèssèssè, Bizunèsh Bèqèlè or Mahmoud Ahmed, Alèmayèhu is a star at the top level of the constellation that once lit up the wild nights in the capital. The singer, as remarkable for his frenetic rock numbers as for his heart-rending ballads, has, by dint of rampant Americanism, earned himself nicknames as the Ethiopian James Brown or the Abyssinian Elvis. With his dazzling stage presence, nimble voicebox and wicked pompadour, he is a strutting show-off, straight out of 'American Graffiti' or 'Saturday Night Fever'. His youthfulness untarnished although he is well into his '60s, Alèmayèhu still represents the explosive myth of the 1960s.

Wewantsounds is delighted to reissue 'Mawood,' one of the cornerstones of Egyptian music, recorded in 1971 by legendary Arabic singer Abdel Halim Hafez. Famously sampled by Jay-Z on 'Big Pimpin'' for one of his '60s tracks, Hafez is captured here live with his full orchestra including Omar Khorshid on guitar. The album mixes traditional Arabic music with modern instrumentation and shades of '70s groove. 'Mawood' is one of Hafez's all-time classics, written by the legendary composer Baligh Hamdi. This release has been newly remastered for vinyl and features the original LP artwork with a 2 page insert featuring a new liner notes (English/French) by Mario Choueiry (IMA, Paris) who curates Wewantsounds' Arabic series of reissues.

With the boom of the audio cassette, an avalanche of raï tapes were produced in Oran and diffused all over the world. Both women and men sang and listened to the new sound, as raï is intimately tied to parties, alcohol and the night. With the spontaneous improvisation of its singers as the main part of each song, raï keeps reinventing itself. In this style, Cheb Hasni, along with Cheb Nasro, incarnates a second generation of musicians. With the "love raï", or sentimental raï, Hasni sings about love, passion and its setbacks -- moving away from the bittersweet daily chronicles of the first chebs and chebates. Having recorded nearly 150 cassettes, Cheb Hasni remains one of the most prolific and talented raï singers of his generation. In the spring of 2017, Hayvanlar Alemi closed themselves in a studio in a small Italian town for a few days and recorded material for multiple future releases. 'Psychedelia In Times Of Turbulence' includes the heavier compositions that came out of these sessions, and marks a further stage in the band's 20 year history with a more layered production and an emphasis on slower, progressive compositions that carry elements from drone metal, stoner rock and psychedelic doom, while subtly preserving the overtones of the band's brand of globally-informed folkloric psych rock. This album presents the side of Hayvanlar Alemi which tends towards the darker without losing the colors, and tends towards the sombre without losing the vitality, with songs that surrender to gravity but refuse to touch the ground. The Brazilian singer-songwriter and guitarist Joyce Silveira Moreno was born and raised in the middle of Copacabana, a short beach stroll from the epicentre of the bossa nova universe. Since her older brother was friendly with leading lights of the bossa nova movement such as Roberto Menescal and Eumir Deodato, she was steeped in the form at an early age and witnessed its key evolution first-hand. She began studying journalism in 1967, shortly before her controversial song 'Me Disseram' reached the finals of Rio's second International Song Competition. The following year, her self-titled debut album was produced by Armando Pittigliani, with orchestration by Dorival Caymmi and arrangements by Gaya; along with her own compositions, the album also featured songs by her rising-star friends, including Caetano Veloso and Marcos Valle.
