This pair of 1960 studio sessions represents some of Charles Mingus' best arrangements. Leading the smaller of two groups, he interpolates 'Exactly Like You' into a driving version of 'Take the 'A' Train' and adds a soulful blues, 'Prayer For Passive Resistance,' both of which feature great solos by tenor saxophonists Booker Ervin, Yusef Lateef, and Joe Farrell. A much larger ensemble is utilized on three tracks, including the advanced bop 'Mingus Fingus No. 2' and 'Bemoanable Lady,' which features a rather strangely conservative alto sax solo by Eric Dolphy. Less successful are Lorraine Curson's vocals on the dissonant 'Eclipse' and pulsating 'Weird Nightmare.' (Allmusic)

Charles Mingus brought together an amazing lineup spanning the totality of the nation's jazz scene with such luminaries as Eric Dolphy, Buddy Collette, Clark Terry, Zoot Sims, Pepper Adams, Jaki Byard, Grady Tate, and more. Brought together to perform new Mingus compositions for the first time in public, the recording was initially considered weak due to limited rehearsal time but the years have been kind to this recording and it's a fantastic set of Mingus compositions, including the powerful 'Freedom' which rivals the works on 'Mingus Ah-Um' (1959) for its strength of purpose and message, in a similar vein to Max Roach's legendary 'We Insist!' album (1960). Mingus is one of the most important figures in 20th century music and this live recording documents his compositional and arranging process as well as sheer swinging joy.SIDE 1:1. Mulligan acquits himself admirably on the Monk classics 'Round Midnight', 'Rhythm-a-ning' and 'Straight, No Chaser', unfurling his smooth tone over their zigzagging melodies and ambitious scalar architecture. Mulligan's 'Decidedly', a bright bop workout, fits easily alongside Monk's tunes, especially with the help of Monk's off-kilter, accented comping. Bassist Wilbur Ware and drummer Shadow Wilson lend solid support to the spirited playing of the two leaders, making this top-notch session (with its great tunes, chemistry, and soloing) a true classic.

Originally released on Blue Note in 1957, City Lights is the result of a fine session recorded at the legendary Rudy Van Gelder studio by an all-star sextet featuring the 19 years old trumpet genius Lee Morgan plus an impressive coalition of Jazz stylists such as Curtis Fuller, on trombone, George Coleman on tenor sax, Ray Bryant on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. All great players caught here in top form while dealing with an excellent repertoire including compositions of Jazz greats such as Benny Golson and Gigi Gryce among others.

RSD 2021 RELEASE! Formed in 1966 in Rome, Musica Elettronica Viva, or MEV for short, used contact microphones to record and manipulate sound wherever it could be found - from box springs to vibrators - and combined those recordings with tenor sax, homemade synths and the very first Moog. The musicians were all about musical freedom and the shunning of convention. Recorded live at the Academy Of Arts in Berlin on October 5, 1967 and made up of a single piece, 'Spacecraft' is a slowly building, jarring and disquieting work that clearly represents MEV's ethos in about half an hour.

Reissue of 2015 album. While most ensembles are driven by personalities, the Necks are powered by an idea. A very large and simple idea - which now seems completely obvious... but only because the Necks thought of it and made it work. Now their pleasure (and ours) is sequentially to re-imagine and explore that idea - the prime directive of which seems to be to be that each unfolding step and every passing detail of any performance be allowed to evolve organically out of the musical conditions established at its moment of departure. In other words, we are in the territory of chaos and catastrophe theory; of hurricanes and butterfly wings... And, since one can never step twice into the same river, each beginning has led to wildly unpredictable and variant outcomes; and imperceptibly: you never hear the changes until somehow they have already happened. "We end up, Lloyd Swanton writes, 'in a very different place from whatever our initial notion _ had been." In the case of 'Vertigo,' we are dropped straight into an almost Feldmanesque musical universe, in which sounds - seemingly disconnected - are already there; creating space rather than inhabiting it. Then, without trying, they mutate. Not mechanically and not according to any pre-determined process - because it's always clear that what we hear is being played by human beings; that it's music. A special kind of music that is not pushy or demanding or demonstrative, but rather co-operative, spatial, ambiguous. A music that leaves room for its listeners.
