Double bassist and composer Cachao Lopez was one of the greatest personalities in the history of Cuban music. A true innovator who already in the '40s pioneered a new exciting form of dance music subsequently worldwide known as mambo. 'Cuban Music In Jam Session' stands as one of his classic albums from the late '50s. A great example of Cachao's innovative jam sessions called "descargas" where various legendary musicians such as tenor sax player Emilio Penalver and trumpeters Armando "Chocolate" Armenteros and Alejandro "Negro" Vivar, improvise over highly infectious grooves and rhythms laid down by Cachao himself on bass and a bunch of super tight percussionists. In 2008, Real World Records approached Dengue Fever to record an albums worth of material for the high-end audio manufacturer Bowers and Wilkins' music subscription service "Society of Sound." The band recorded 'The Province' for the first time, four newly arranged tracks of previously released material, and five tracks recorded live at Real World Studios in front of a live audience. 'In The Ley Lines' gives fans a chance to hear Dengue Fever like never before. The quality of the recordings is cleaner, crisper, and contains the only studio version of 'Doo Wop (Today I Learnt To Drink),' plus live versions of fan favorites 'Sober Driver,' 'New Years Eve,' and a rocking six-and-a-half minute live performance of 'One Thousand Tears Of A Tarantula.' 2023 was not an easy year for Dobranotch, the Klezmer band from Saint Petersburg: After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, part of the ensemble left the country and settled in exile in Germany. It was not an easy decision for the musicians. "We left behind family, friends, and fans without the certainty of ever seeing them again," writes the band. Half of the members remained in Russia. Now, Dobranotch presents another album, 'Vander Ikh Mir Lustik,' which was recorded in Germany with a new lineup. An additional instrument has been added: alongside the violin, clarinet, saxophone, banjo, tuba, and drums, a dulcimer now finds its deserved place on stage. With this album, Dobranotch emphasizes their roots and impresses with a lively mix of Jewish, Moldavian, Russian, Roma, Caucasian, Ukrainian, and Serbian traditional melodies and songs in Yiddish and Russian. A special feature is the Klezmer version of the US classic 'In The Pines,' which recalls the blues background of bandleader Mitia Khramtsov. Dobranotch also loves to experiment: in the song 'Skotchne,' they integrate drum & bass elements into their Klezmer sounds.

Fairuz's classic album 'Kifak Inta' was produced by her son Ziad Rahbani in the late '80s and only released on cassette and CD in 1991. Composed and arranged by Rahbani, who had already produced 'Wahdon' (1979) and 'Maarifti Feek' (1987), 'Kifak Inta' features his usual blend of jazz, funk and Arabic music, spiced up with Brazilian influences serving Fairuz's beautiful voice. The album successfully pursue the path that made 'Wahdon' and 'Maarifti Feek' such in-demand albums, modernising the sound of the Lebanese Diva with contemporary arrangements. It is the first time 'Kifak Inta' is released on vinyl, retaining the original cassette artwork. The album - curated by Mario Choueiry from Institut du Monde Arabe (Paris), who also wrote the liner notes (Fr/En) - has been newly remastered by Colorsound Studio in Paris.

Wewantsounds is delighted to reissue 'Mawood,' one of the cornerstones of Egyptian music, recorded in 1971 by legendary Arabic singer Abdel Halim Hafez. Famously sampled by Jay-Z on 'Big Pimpin'' for one of his '60s tracks, Hafez is captured here live with his full orchestra including Omar Khorshid on guitar. The album mixes traditional Arabic music with modern instrumentation and shades of '70s groove. 'Mawood' is one of Hafez's all-time classics, written by the legendary composer Baligh Hamdi. This release has been newly remastered for vinyl and features the original LP artwork with a 2 page insert featuring a new liner notes (English/French) by Mario Choueiry (IMA, Paris) who curates Wewantsounds' Arabic series of reissues.

Raï is the music of a youth hungover from Algeria's recent independence. It became a space for a liberated, transgressive dialogue that told the social truths of its time -- an up-front yet poetic voice that covers the taboos and frustrations of daily life, expressing emotion without detour. This voice is heard at weddings, cabarets, in the nightclubs of the Oranese coast, and casually on the street... With the boom of the audio cassette, an avalanche of raï tapes were produced in Oran and diffused all over the world. Both women and men sang and listened to the new sound, as raï is intimately tied to parties, alcohol and the night. With the spontaneous improvisation of its singers as the main part of each song, raï keeps reinventing itself. In this style, Cheb Hasni, along with Cheb Nasro, incarnates a second generation of musicians. With the "love raï", or sentimental raï, Hasni sings about love, passion and its setbacks -- moving away from the bittersweet daily chronicles of the first chebs and chebates. Having recorded nearly 150 cassettes, Cheb Hasni remains one of the most prolific and talented raï singers of his generation. Almost thirty years after his death, this three-volume compilation of rare tracks from his cassette releases on the Oriental Music Production label is a tribute to the lasting legacy of Cheb Hasni -- ya raï! In the spring of 2017, Hayvanlar Alemi closed themselves in a studio in a small Italian town for a few days and recorded material for multiple future releases. 'Psychedelia In Times Of Turbulence' includes the heavier compositions that came out of these sessions, and marks a further stage in the band's 20 year history with a more layered production and an emphasis on slower, progressive compositions that carry elements from drone metal, stoner rock and psychedelic doom, while subtly preserving the overtones of the band's brand of globally-informed folkloric psych rock. This album presents the side of Hayvanlar Alemi which tends towards the darker without losing the colors, and tends towards the sombre without losing the vitality, with songs that surrender to gravity but refuse to touch the ground.
