Palmer, Steve : Useful histories (black)

Steve Palmer is a young guitar player from Minneapolis, and 'Useful Histories' is his second full length release. The first, 'Unblinking Sun' (a 2014 CD on the Dying for Bad Music label) stood out with its wide-ranging instrumental mixture of American Primitive picking and psychedelic rock influences. As its title hints, on 'Useful Histories' those roots remain in spirit, reconfigured and developed due to time and circumstance; recorded over a two-year period as Palmer wasrequired to adjust to a neurological condition that necessitated changes in his guitar technique, eventually catalyzing his larger musical approach in a more experimental and focused direction. The album divides roughly between extended "full-band" songs... alternately cruising down astraight-eight space highway into a full meltdown on the horizon, or avant-choogling their way into the air like some lost late-night ballroom jam... and layered guitar pieces that incorporate looping effects, fluid pensive picking, and the sound of pure electricity coursing through the power lines on a North Midwestern night. Joining forces once again, Sunrise Ocean Bender Records and Deep Water Acres are honored topresent Palmer's latest offering of cosmic American psychedelia. Five immersive tracks spread across 37 minutes, with audio mastering by Eric Carbonara at Nada Sound Studio.

'A MUSICAL EVOCATION OF GILLES DELEUZE' - This album (the tenth in Palo Alto's discography) was born from two ambitions: to pay tribute to Soft Machine's 'Third' on form (4 sides/4 titles) and to philosopher Gilles Deleuze ('Difference And Repetition' is the title of his thesis) on the contents. The 4 long pieces of this double concept album were developed over 2 years and each has a different style and climate. Bold and kaleidoscopic, 'Difference And Repetition' perfectly synthesizes the musical and literary obsessions of Palo Alto. Formed in Paris in 1989, Palo Alto released its first album (a cassette) on the Italian label Old Europa Cafe in 1990. The band is now composed of Jacques Barbéri (also a science fiction author), Laurent Pernice (ex-member of the French industrial band Nox) and Philippe Perreaudin (also coordinator of several compilations and reissues: Legendary Pink Dots, Un Département, Nino Ferrer Revisited, Ptôse, Hardy Fox). Literature, and particularly science fiction, is a leitmotiv in the band's work. Antoine Volodine, Thomas Pynchon, Philip K. Dick, Lewis Carroll or J.G. Ballard have been invoked many times. In recent years, Palo Alto has multiplied musical collaborations with, among others, The Residents, Ptôse, Klimperei and Tuxedomoon. From industrial music to inextricable electronic ramifications, by making a detour through improvisation, the musical universe of Palo Alto is multifaceted. Pancakes / Magi Razzo : Oh what's that/neue signale

Split LP on clear vinyl, limited to 500 copies. Artwork by Darren Merinuk. This is an interesting split LP with the current German psych band The Pancakes (older material from 2005-2009) and some unreleased material by Magi Razzo from 1986! The record comes with a 2 sided insert for each band. The A side starts with 5 tracks of psychedelic garage rock by the Pancakes including the one called 'The Too Long Fried Hemp Pancake Woman'. 'The Ghost' is a funny track but it has you singing along, "Silly Ghost" by the end. 'The Hemp Pancake' song is freaky, strange and a bit like surf psych stuff. The long track 'Flying' is more psychedelic and floating with some nice bendy guitar and a stoned nature. 'Hawaii' and 'Banana' are shorter 3-4 minute tracks. 'Hawaii' is a funny track and 'Banana' a mostly instrumental track with a repeated theme and again surf returns. Magi Razzo were a dada psychedelic band from Germany in the '80s. These 8 tracks were recorded on a 4 track tape machine in 1986. 'Java Girl' reminds a bit of Hungarian music! 'Der Rhein Ist Tot' is also a strange mix of surf calypso nonsense with some psychedelic guitar. 'Melancholie 86' has a cool drive to it as well. 'Flashback No. 5' also returns to this slight surf psych feel and a really strange psychout section in this instrumental track. 'Wieder Einmal' is the longest track at 5 minutes. 'Silicon Orbit' features that 13th Floor Elevators freaky jug sound but is pretty cool. 'Silicon Safer Sex Part 1' ends the side and is a happy strange number that you want to whistle along with. Pretty strange but cool record especially if you like surf psych stuff and understand German!
