...FEATURING THE HIGHLIFE' - Recorded in 1963 and originally released on Colpix, 'Highlife' was one of Randy Weston's first declared homages to African music and heritage. A direct fruit of his first trip to Nigeria in 1961, the album is considered one the highpoints in Weston's long and articulated career. Beautifully arranged by the great Melba Liston, the music reveals the unbroken relationship between the African ancestral sensibility and the Afro-American jazz experience. Under the direction of Melba Liston and pianist Randy Weston here we have a first class group of musicians including heavyweights such as Ray Copeland - trumpet, Jimmy Cleveland, Quentin Jackson - trombones, Julius Watkins - French horn, Aaron Bell - tuba, Budd Johnson - Booker Ervin - saxophones, Peck Morrison - bass, Charlie Persip, Frankie Dunlop - drums, Archie Lee and George Young - percussion. Weather Report live from Yomiuri Land Open Theatre East, Inagi, Japan on July 29th 1983. This was to be the last incarnation of the legendary Weather Report. Publicity shots at the time show Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter opening a large packing case to reveal their new rhythm section. Despite the departure of Jaco Pastorius and Peter Erskine the leaders are smiling broadly, once again they have replaced the irreplaceable. Night by night, throughout the long 1983 tour documented here, drummer Omar Hakim and bassist Victor Bailey would prove themselves the equals of their predecessors and forge a powerful ensemble sound. The set list includes tunes from 'Night Passage' (1980), 'Procession' (1983) and 'Domino Theory' (1984) plus a medley of past glories ('Black Market'/'Badia'/'A Remark You Made') and their breakout hit 'Birdland.' Spiritual, intimate and revolutionary, yet firmly rooted in Brazil's folklore, 'Africadeus' was the breakthrough album of the mighty Naná Vasconcelos. In his first solo album, Naná introduced the berimbau to the world, taking the instrument, which was otherwise strictly confined to the capoeira context, to a universal level. The berimbau, a Brazilian one-stringed instrument of African origin, is the main instrument of capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art that also incorporates elements of dance and music. Having played in the shadows for other artists such as Milton Nascimento, Gato Barbieri or Som Imaginario, Naná is here finally in the spotlight. Recorded in 1973 in France for Pierre Barouh's Saravah label, this is the album that definitely imprinted Naná's name in the international scene, on his track to becoming one of the best percussionists of all times.

Urban Sax was founded in 1973 by French experimental musician Gilbert Artman, a.o. the mastermind behind Lard Free. Driven by his interest in the relation between space and sound, he experimented with large groups of saxofonists, varying from 16 to 34 players, at times also including bass players, percussionists, vocalists and even dancers. An early experiment took place in the French village of Menton, where Artman placed the musicians on rooftops, in various streets, on squares, and in gardens. Though the total experiences of these experiments/events can't be captured on whatever sound carrier, several recordings were made through the years. Originally issued on CD only (by EPM Musique), Urban Sax' 1991 album 'Spiral' now sees its first ever vinyl release.

Terry, Buddy : Awareness

Buddy Terry's album 'Awareness' from 1971 is his first one for Mainstream Records out of the three he recorded for Bob Shad's label. This is pure undiluted spiritual jazz both deep and funky. Prior to that Terry had recorded a couple of soul jazz albums for Prestige Record, 'Electric Soul' in 1967 and 'Natural Soul' in 1968. He then went under the radar until the recording of this sublime album, an undisputed treasure featuring Stanley Cowell (p), Buster Williams, Victor Gaskin (dr), Roland Prince (gt) Cecil Bridgewater (tp) and Mtume (perc).
