Born Herman Poole Blount in Alabama during 1914, Sun Ra first emerged on the Chicago jazz scene during the late 1940s. One of the great avant-garde composers of his generation - leading the way on piano, organ, and (eventually) synthesizer - beginning in the mid-1950s and lasting until his death in 1993, led the Arkestra, a band through which a near countless number of important artists passed and collaborated with, and many remained for the duration of their careers, notably Marshall Allen, John Gilmore and June Tyson. Known for their wild costumes and theatrics, Ra's eccentric image and claims that he was from Saturn was deeply political, imagining an alternate social order, history, and future for African Americans that rests as a pioneering force in the Afro-Futurist movement.While Sun Ra and his Arkestra can best be located within the broader movements of avant-garde jazz - particularly as innovators of free and spiritual jazz in their evolving forms - the composer was notoriously hard to pin down on creative terms. He was a visionary titan whose work traversed nearly half of the 20th Century, continuously pushing the idiom of jazz at every turn, ingesting and incorporating the entire history African American music - the blues, R&B, soul, gospel, ragtime, hot jazz, swing, bebop, free jazz, and fusion, etc. - into his work, without any division or hierarchy, producing roughly 100 full lengths bear his name, beginning with 1957's 'Jazz By Sun Ra Vol. 1,' and stretching well beyond his death in 1993. Despite how much was captured and released, remarkably, rare and previously unheard recordings continue to emerge and amaze. "To understand the significance of the word 'featuring' on 'Featuring Pharoah Sanders And Black Harold,' consider how infrequently Sun Ra used it and the exact way it had been used."The October Revolution in Jazz, organized by Bill Dixon in the West Village in 1964, presented a vivid cross section of approaches to the new music, including a sextet led by Ra. For the October Revolution's continuation, titled Four Days in December, held at nearby Judson Hall on the last days of 1964, the Arkestra performance presented Pharoah Sanders as well as a flautist (who was and remained obscure thereafter) named Harold Murray, nicknamed Black Harold. "It wasn't until long after Sanders had achieved worldwide acclaim with John Coltrane that Ra and manager Alton Abraham decided to issue the music they'd recorded at Judson Hall. After its first release in plain or hand-decorated covers in 1976, Featuring Pharoah Sanders And Black Harold remained an exceptionally rare item in the El Saturn discography, known to a few lucky collectors. Long-awaited reissue of this album by the famous Hungarian guitarist, originally released in 1969. "Gabor Szabo exploded onto the American jazz scene in the early sixties. His unusual approach and unique sound brought something startling and new to jazz. With Chico Hamilton, Charles Lloyd and Gary McFarland, Szabo offered something few in jazz had ever heard before: guitarist as enchanter and conjurer and musician as storyteller and mesmerist. Once Szabo declared his independence in 1966, he also proved how seamlessly jazz can blend the Beatles and Bacharach with Latin and Indian styles. The guitarist released a string of albums on Impulse that challenged many assumptions about jazz and stand out today as some of the most radical, yet appealing music of the period. But the times were woefully a-changing. Szabo biographer Károly Libisch considers the year 1969 a "turning point" for the guitarist. The spell Szabo weaved in the press was beginning to wane. The blizzard of coverage he generated in the previous few years began to trickle off. Perhaps the rise of rock -and rock-guitar heroes- tamped down the guitarist's exotic allure and faddish charm.Then, too, Szabo's erratic behavior started attracting poor notice and hastened the demise of his storied quintet, featuring guitarist Jimmy Stewart and percussionist Hal Gordon, in late 1968. Now, both Gabor Szabo, the artist, and businessman, needed a hit. '1969' was his response to the call of 1969. The album was released in August 1969, and initial reviews were positive. Cash Box raved that Gabor Szabo's '1969' "is magnificent music and an album that deserves great success" while Record World called it "luscious guitaring" that features "lots of contemporary material, which he makes completely his own." Gabor Szabo's '1969' never did find the success it was seeking. But it remains a lovely listening experience that finds the guitarist at his melodic best at an important crossroads in his recording career."

The members of Szun Waves may not have been collectively in the same country, let alone room, for over two years, but that has not prevented them from realising their third album, 'Earth Patterns'. The trio - comprised of producer Luke Abbott, saxophonist Jack Wyllie (Portico Quartet) and drummer Laurence Pike (Triosk/PVT/Liars) - recorded the album sessions together at the tail end of their 2019 European tour, locking themselves away in the studio for three days of improvisation. Driven by his interest in the relation between space and sound, he experimented with large groups of saxofonists, varying from 16 to 34 players, at times also including bass players, percussionists, vocalists and even dancers. An early experiment took place in the French village of Menton, where Artman placed the musicians on rooftops, in various streets, on squares, and in gardens. Though the total experiences of these experiments/events can't be captured on whatever sound carrier, several recordings were made through the years. 1978's album 'Urban Sax 2', again on Czanne/Cobra, is the continuation of the debut-LP. It features parts 2 and 3 of the pieces contained on 'Urban Sax 1', and shows similarities to the music of La Monte Young, Phil Niblock, Glenn Branca, Steve Reich and Terry Riley. This reissue comes with remastered sound and a booklet offering rare pix and liner notes by Artman himself.

Vasconcelos, Nana : Africadeus (black)

Spiritual, intimate and revolutionary, yet firmly rooted in Brazil's folklore, 'Africadeus' was the breakthrough album of the mighty Naná Vasconcelos. In his first solo album, Naná introduced the berimbau to the world, taking the instrument, which was otherwise strictly confined to the capoeira context, to a universal level. The berimbau, a Brazilian one-stringed instrument of African origin, is the main instrument of capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art that also incorporates elements of dance and music. Having played in the shadows for other artists such as Milton Nascimento, Gato Barbieri or Som Imaginario, Naná is here finally in the spotlight. Recorded in 1973 in France for Pierre Barouh's Saravah label, this is the album that definitely imprinted Naná's name in the international scene, on his track to becoming one of the best percussionists of all times.
