Premier leaders of the mod and indie scene of the early to late '80s and beyond, Ed Ball's The Times produced some of the best '60s inspired tracks recorded - a string of pre-Britpop Britpop LPs that transcended the line between mod and a more refined commercial sound and here on this LP are a selection of favourites from the early years. Ed himself has kindly contributed some great liner notes that are on the rear sleeve and continue on the double sided insert.

Tolouse Low Trax : Leave me alone

On the fifth album by Tolouse Low Trax (a.k.a. German Parisian Detlef Weinrich) the velvety heaviness and rawness of his earlier records seems to have given way to a new playfulness. A playfulness perhaps in the sense of an electronica reminiscent of the late 1990s, which in its idea of deconstruction and reduction is currently enjoying a new appreciation in the clubs. But also in the sense of an urban vibe of hip hop and dub references, which are woven into a very unique mix in Weinrich's tracks.

A 12-track compilation of two David Toop albums originally released via Virgin, 'Pink Noir' (1996) and 'Spirit World' (1997). The music is remastered and now released on vinyl for the first time. Uzu Noir is the solo output of Antti Uusimäki, a Finnish audio engineer-mixer-producer who has worked with Brian Eno, Circle, The Tindersticks, Ulver, These New Puritans, Pharaoh Overlord, Cyclobe, Old Man Gloom, The Utopia Strong & Natacha Atlas. The 'Zo!' EP is Uzu Noir's debut release. Its 3 tracks breathe somewhere between darker shade of ambient music and kraut electronics (Berlin school and kosmische) with hints of new age, industrial, sci-fi and progressive synthesiser appreciation. Uzu Noir is influenced by electronic and experimental artists and composers such as Tangerine Dream, Coil, Brian Eno, Cluster, Klaus Schulze, Alice Coltrane, Christoph De Babalon, Talk Talk, Wendy Carlos, Aphex Twin, Biosphere, Philip Glass, Harold Budd and John Carpenter.

After three albums based purely on synthesizers, the Danish duo now takes a leap by adding live drums and guitars to its latest album. It's a natural step, considering that Jakob Skott, one half of the duo, spends his time drumming in Causa Sui, as well as a slew of jazz-infused projects. The expansion of drums adds a natural '70s groove, maintaining a spontaneous vibe that also soaks into the analogue synths of modular wizard Kristoffer Ovesen.

Vigroux, Franck : Grand bal

Following his highly acclaimed 2021 album 'Atotal' (Aesthetical) and 2022 'Magnetoscope' (Raster), Vigroux returns with eight heavyweight tracks composed in 2023 and 2024. Vigroux states about his current work: "I am not very talkative about my music unless I am specifically questioned, the immaterial dimension of music partly spares us from the major questions which are the prerogative of theatrical forms for which I am also very active, in this sense for me music is a real outlet where things are done intuitively, for pleasure". Always pushing forth and expanding his now classic rigidly cold analog sounds and rhythmic structures entwined with lush atmospheric synth compositions, 'Grand Bal' is another milestone in his ever growing discography.

But do expect an average 122 bpm banger party record. It's a well-balanced album, worth listening to in one go, featuring strong structures, houses extended-vocal-technique ornaments. The choirwork hints at the arrangements of David Axelrod or Ennio Morricone. The ubiquitous vocoders are pushed to their limits. Sax, trumpet and percussion add color to the record.
