The core duo plus guest collaborators expand its sonic palette of Rick Brown's elemental percussive patterns and Che Chen's ecstatic modalguitar style to a new musical richness. With some tape releases and their first album 'Wooden Bag,' 75 Dollar Bill quickly introduced themselves as one of the hottest, most unique and essential groups at the heart of NYC's underground - the following 'Wood/Metal/Plastic Pattern/Rhythm/Rock' (2016) made the duo known internationally, and the 2019 double vinyl 'I Was Real' turned out a major success at the critics and audience alike with the #1 spot in The Wire's albums of the year list! Then came the pandemic, and in lack of opportunities to actually perform in public, the core duo of Rick Brown and Che Chen released several Bandcamp only albums in digital format, one of these being 'Power Failures.' Brown's elemental percussive patterns (often simply played on a wooden box)and Che Chen's ecstatic modal guitar style (often under the influence of his studies with Mauritanian guitarist Jeich Ould Chigaly) are at the core of the tracks with guest collaboratorslike Yo La Tengo's Ira Kaplan (guitar), Sue Garner (violin) or Steve Maing (saxophone, guitar) expanding the sonic palette to a new musical richness. Trance-inducing psychedelia, "placeless, gripping grooves" (The Guardian), collagedrehearsal and field recordings, mantric percussion, microtonal guitar sounds - 75 Dollar Bill sound as deeply rooted in traditions as they sound fresh-of-today, a kind of future music from the past. Reminiscent of the 'Clube Da Esquina' album he made the same year with Brazilian superstar Milton Nascimento, Lô Borges' 1972 solo debut proves that his influence on Nascimento was quite strong. The recording is texturally lush and dreamy, at times urgent and bizarre, and filled with the fantastic and intricate guitar playing one would expect of Borges after hearing his dazzling work with Nascimento. His vocal arrangements are lavish, often similar to the vocal qualities of George Harrison's 'All Things Must Pass,' and his instrumental arrangements are just plain confounding. Piano phrases mash in and out of control over the unorthodox yet clever progressions; polyphonic percussion interlocks with jazzed-out organ lines and thoughtful, melodic bass work. Occasionally, a string section will fall into place, fulfilling the album's decorative quota, and the whole construction becomes watertight. It is truly stunning to pick apart the timbre of individual instruments and realize how necessary and meticulous each part is in the overall presentation. Borges is one of those arrangers who can build up a music bed with miles of depth and construct a wall of sound, yet keep the overall concept in crisp focus. No layer of the instrumentation seems to ever become obscured by another, nor does any part seem unnecessary, and so much is going on rhythmically and melodically that it demands full attention. The remarkable quality of Brazil's musical culture to seamlessly integrate as many outside influences into one place is well represented here. Many western textures, such as soul, rock, jazz, and pop, are absorbed into the picture with fervor and grace rarely executed in the world of western music. 'Nao Foi Nada' illustrates this particularly well, but the melting-pot sentiment echoes through all of Borges' performances here. (All Music)

Reissue of the 1975 self-titled debut album from Brazilian vocalist and bossa nova luminary Emilio Santiago. Nicknamed 'The Nat King Cole of Brazil', Santiago was a master bossa balladeer and a top-class crooner. But he is known equally for his Brazilian funk, soul and boogie classics. One of his best known is album opener 'Bananeira', a party-starting version of the song originally written by Joao Donato and Gilberto Gil. 'Brother' is a smooth-grooving killer with great horn arrangements and a huge backing choir, while 'La Mulata' is a soulful, swinging salsa stepper. Originally released on the CID label, the album showcases the full range of Emilio's talents, while paying homage to some of Brazil's greatest composers, including Jorge Ben, Marcos and Sergio Valle and Ivan Lins among others.
