V/A : Dirty Work Going On: Kent & Modern Records Blues Into The 60s Vol 1
UK collection, a 26-track CD compiled and annotated by noted blues authority Dick Shurman. This features nine artists who recorded for the Kent-Modern labels and contains material from the early to mid-'60s. The songs are heavily influenced by the pacesetting presence of B. B. King, rhythm and blues, funk and social consciousness in the lyrics as the civil rights movement brought change and turbulence. There's some pretty rare stuff here, as most tracks are new to UK CD. Eight have only been released on limited editions of 300 by P-Vine in 1999, while seven are completely unreleased. Look out for a second volume later in the year.

V/A : Saint Etienne Present Songs For The Fountain Coffee Room
2020 collection. Songs For The Fountain Coffee Room is the latest in the highly popular Saint Etienne Present series, soundtracks for places both real and imaginary. This time, Sarah Cracknell, Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs have put together a selection to fit a bar in mid-'70s Los Angeles, the kind of place where Warren Beatty and Julie Christie might meet in the afternoon for a secret rendezvous between shooting scenes for Shampoo. There's a high quotient of airy, top-down soul, FM yacht rock, and an even larger amount of blue-eyed soul, with the odd singer-songwriter from Laurel Canyon making an appearance. Familiar summer sounds come from Todd Rundgren ('Love Is The Answer'), Millie Jackson ('A House For Sale') and Seals & Crofts ('Get Closer'). Among the discoveries are Hall and Oates' deep cut 'Lilly (Are You Happy)'; Bill Quateman's irresistible acoustic guitar and string-powered 'Only Love'; Marvin Gaye's gorgeous 'Where Are We Going?', from the period between "What's Going On" and "Let's Get It On"; and the £100 crossover soul gem 'One Way Or The Other' by the Fifth Avenue Band. These gems are the kind of thing Netflix will be tripping over themselves to use next season. Amid the potted palms, the pace is strictly mid-tempo; it's too warm for anything faster. The windows are wide open, the sky is a clear blue, and this is the perfect summer soundtrack.

V/A : New Breed R&B: Saturday Night Special
New Breed is back with a historical bang. The opening track and title inspiration is Aaron Collins & the Teen Queens' 'Every Saturday Night'. It's R&B pedigree is inestimable; Aaron was a member of the Flairs/Flares LA vocal group and wrote songs for Z.Z. Hill, Jackie Day, Cookie Jackson and others and, in 1972, Ray Charles recorded his 'Every Saturday Night' for ABC. The Modern tape vaults have given up this original 1966 R&B take of the song with both Aaron and his sisters, the Teen Queens, performing at their best. All the more remarkable as the girls had not recorded since 1962 and it was to be their last session, both dying tragically a few years later. More unissued beauties come from East Coast outfit the Corvairs with 'I'll Never Do It Again', Oakland's funky bluesman Johnny Talbot and 'Satisfied', Gay Meadows' Atlanta-recorded 'Head Doctor', a trio of obscure Ohio R&B outfits - Little Macey & The Valiants, Big Charley & The Domans and Pee Wee Foster. Rare 45s come courtesy of Curly Mays, Pat Garvis, Esko Wallace and the Tren-teens. There are Ace CD tracks that went largely undiscovered by the New Breed crowd from Prince Conley, Rob Robinson and the Lon-Genes, while other highlights come from the very recently discovered Freddie Williams track 'Purty Little Mama' recorded for Norman Petty in New York, Slim & The Twilights' New Orleans-sounding 'Family Man' and Tony Clarke's early Detroit rocker 'Your Love Must Be Taboo' - presented digitally from master tape for the first time. We have stunning photos of Margaret Lewis, Flora D, the Metallics, Rob Robinson and Johnny "Guitar" Watson, along with some fax 'n' info for the serious Breeder.
