Modern and grounded in 1960s hard-bop sensibility, the American pianist and composer Albert Dailey (1939-1984) had perfect control over his instrument. Since an early age he played with cutting-edge musicians, the likes of Art Blakey, Sarah Vaughan, Stan Getz, Charles Mingus and Lee Konitz to name just a few. But despite that, he was an underrated artist during his lifetime receiving deserved recognition only after his death. 'Renaissance 2 November 1977' is his second album, played by a bold group that includes the voice of Cheryl Alexander, Carter Jefferson on sax, Cecil McBee on bass and features both Cheryl Alexander and Adam Nussbaum on drums. The third of his collaborations with Gil Evans, 'Sketches' was inspired by the classical 'Concierto de Aranjuez,' which sparked the suite that makes up the LP. Drummers Jimmy Cobb and Elvin Jones and bassist Paul Chambers reconfigured their approaches to blend with the orchestra under Evans' command and Davis uses a muted flugelhorn for the epic opener; his solo on 'Saeta' is blinding and the adapted Andalusian folk song 'Solea' draws on flamenco. This absolute stunner is a must-have! Comes on clear vinyl.

'Relaxin'' with the Miles Davis Quintet is in every way a masterpiece. When Miles Davis, the trumpeter (1926-1991), hadformed the band in 1955, his colleagues - tenor saxophonist John Coltrane, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, anddrummer Philly Joe Jones - were not considered jazz-world A-listers. And before conquering his narcotics addiction earlier in the '50s, Davis had seen his once-promising career go into eclipse. By 1956, however, his sound, especially when muted, was an achingly personal counterpart to the vocals of Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra. 'Relaxin'' (plus its prestige companions, 'Miles,' 'Cookin',' 'Workin'' and 'Steamin'') reestablished Davis, and elevated his quintet as the gold standard of small groups. This set is called 'Relaxin'' because of the ballad performances in several different bright tempos. From medium-bounce to crisply up, 'Relaxin'' remains one of Davis's sunniest outings, a prime example of one of the outstanding ensembles of the 20th century reaching the summit of their artistry.

Kenny Garrett's searing alto sax and Foley's "lead bass" share solo duties but the rhythm section take the honours here. Miles was renowned for his determination to keep moving forwards and in this band Ricky "Sugarfoot" Wellman's go-go beat and Darryl "The Munch" Jones' high energy playing drive the music forwards relentlessly. No other band has ever sounded like this. In 1987 Miles was still playing funk and rock the be-bop way.
