'Jazz In Silhouette' is the quintessential record of Sun Ra's late 1950s Chicago period. Recorded and issued in 1959, it marks a coda for the bandleader's bebop/hard-bop stage, as his interstellar traveler persona began to transform the band (and the music). It also charts the future, showcasing the brilliant tenor sax stylings of John Gilmore, and introduces the iconic playing of Arkestra mainstays Marshall Allen, Pat Patrick, and Ronnie Boykins. Many of the early works on these recordings would remain staples in Arkestra set lists for the rest of Sun Ra's life. This expanded edition includes the complete, contemporaneous 'Sound Sun Pleasure,' rare stereo mixes, and bonus tracks. This edition's exterior features the original space nymph cover art, which only appeared in cropped and washed-out reproductions on an early '60s version. Liner notes by Irwin Chusid, and an expanded essay by John Corbett.

Long-awaited reissue of this album by the famous Hungarian guitarist, originally released in 1969. "Gabor Szabo exploded onto the American jazz scene in the early sixties. His unusual approach and unique sound brought something startling and new to jazz. With Chico Hamilton, Charles Lloyd and Gary McFarland, Szabo offered something few in jazz had ever heard before: guitarist as enchanter and conjurer and musician as storyteller and mesmerist. Once Szabo declared his independence in 1966, he also proved how seamlessly jazz can blend the Beatles and Bacharach with Latin and Indian styles. The guitarist released a string of albums on Impulse that challenged many assumptions about jazz and stand out today as some of the most radical, yet appealing music of the period. But the times were woefully a-changing. Szabo biographer Károly Libisch considers the year 1969 a "turning point" for the guitarist. The spell Szabo weaved in the press was beginning to wane. The blizzard of coverage he generated in the previous few years began to trickle off. Perhaps the rise of rock -and rock-guitar heroes- tamped down the guitarist's exotic allure and faddish charm.Then, too, Szabo's erratic behavior started attracting poor notice and hastened the demise of his storied quintet, featuring guitarist Jimmy Stewart and percussionist Hal Gordon, in late 1968. Now, both Gabor Szabo, the artist, and businessman, needed a hit. '1969' was his response to the call of 1969. The album was released in August 1969, and initial reviews were positive. Cash Box raved that Gabor Szabo's '1969' "is magnificent music and an album that deserves great success" while Record World called it "luscious guitaring" that features "lots of contemporary material, which he makes completely his own." Gabor Szabo's '1969' never did find the success it was seeking. But it remains a lovely listening experience that finds the guitarist at his melodic best at an important crossroads in his recording career."

Hungarian guitarist Gabor Szabo (1936-82) issued only three live recordings during his lifetime. Significantly, the first of these, 'The Sorcerer' (1967), remains the most popular album in the guitarist's all-too abbreviated discography. But there were also 'More Sorcery' (1968) and 'Gabor Szabo Live With Charles Lloyd' (1974), offering Szabo totally in his element and at his bewitching best. Several more of Szabo's concert recordings have surfaced in the intervening years, including this one, superbly captured for radio broadcast live in 1976 at the 600-seat Agora Ballroom in Cleveland, Ohio. It is a revelation. There is a sense here that concert patrons may have been hearing an altogether different Gabor Szabo than record buyers. For one thing, Szabo is heard fronting what is likely his own group, rather than an army of studio musicians. In 1976, Szabo was leading a tremendous quartet with George Cables (or Joanne Grauer) on piano, Tony Dumas on bass and Sherman Ferguson on drums. Szabo had not had a band with this much jazz clout since his famed quartet with Jimmy Stewart in 1967-68 - and it is a union worth savoring: Szabo's records during this period were light, at best, on jazz. It's unclear if any of these musicians are on the Agora date, but as Dumas's 'It Happens' opens the program, it's a good bet, at least, that the bassist is on board here. But as Szabo's '76 quartet is not known to have recorded a studio record, 'Live In Cleveland' is the closest thing to what a mid-seventies Szabo jazz album would sound like. Gone, are the strings, vocals, and concessions to commercial consideration so prevalent on so many of Szabo's studio records at the time. What is present, though, is fine craftsmanship, tremendous interplay, and the exciting improvisation that good jazz always yields. This particular concert was part of Sansui's 'New World of Jazz,' a series of 13-hour-long jazz concerts recorded at Cleveland's iconic Agora Ballroom and broadcast over 40 FM radio stations. Szun Waves : Earth patterns (brown)

The members of Szun Waves may not have been collectively in the same country, let alone room, for over two years, but that has not prevented them from realising their third album, 'Earth Patterns'. The trio - comprised of producer Luke Abbott, saxophonist Jack Wyllie (Portico Quartet) and drummer Laurence Pike (Triosk/PVT/Liars) - recorded the album sessions together at the tail end of their 2019 European tour, locking themselves away in the studio for three days of improvisation. They emerged with hours of music, some inspired by their live shows, most born fresh in the studio itself, ready to be moulded into the group's third album in five years.
