  • V/A : Merengue tipico, nueva generacion!

'Merengue Típico, Nueva Generación!' delves into the heart of Dominican merengue, a genre whose significance often eludes the spotlight. Bongo Joe's venture into unexplored terrain takes us to the Caribbean, specifically the Dominican Republic, shedding light on its musical tapestry. Curated by Xavier Daive, aka Funky Bompa, the compilation unveils rare '60s and '70s gems, providing a glimpse into a transformative period following the fall of the Trujillo regime. With over 20 years in the Dominican Republic, Xavier Daive meticulously sources original 45s, offering a snapshot of merengue's evolution during a creatively charged era post-Trujillo. The genre's roots, dating back to the 19th-century Dominican Republic, predate salsa, establishing its unique identity with the introduction ofaccordions via German trade ships. The genre's classic típico configuration emerged in the mid-'60s, leaving a lasting impact on its evolution. Focused on the explosive '60s and '70s merengue típico scene, influenced by genre pioneers like "Tatico" Henríquez and Trio Reynoso, the compilation showcasestechnical finesse and high-speed rhythms. Tracks like Rafaelito Román's 'Que Mala Suerte' embody the genre's infectious energy. Aristides Ramírez's 'Los Lanbones' adds a touch of humor, cautioning against pub freeloaders. 'Merengue Típico, NuevaGeneración' transcends the realms of a typical reissue; it's an immersive journey into the roots of Dominican merengue, expanding its narrative beyond borders to enrich the global musical landscape. This compilation goes beyond individual tracks, providing a historical and cultural context, enriching our understanding of the genre's evolution in the DominicanRepublic during a crucial period. Designed for both connoisseurs and wild dancefloors, this compilation is not only a historical and cultural exploration but also a treasure trovefor DJs seeking to infuse their sets with the vibrant rhythms of merengue típico.TRACKS:01. • V/A : Intenta (2lp)

'EXPERIMENTAL & ELECTRONIC MUSIC FROM SWITZERLAND 1981-1983' - Décalé Records and Bongo Joe Records present a compilation placing the spotlight on the Swiss experimental and electronic scene of the '80s and the early '90s. The compilation 'Intenta' assembles under-appreciated gems, sought-after titlesand newly mixed versions. It places leftfield synth-pop next to otherworldly jazz, and joins the dots between lyrical post-punk excursions and proto-house experimentation. The compilation covers a period of transition: When songs mutated into sounds. When synthesizers and samplers became the règle du jeu in DIY music-making. When a politicized youth movement slowly gave way to the hedonistic embrace of techno culture in Switzerland. 'Intenta' mines the outer fringes of a scene yet to be. Many of these experimenters were pretty much on their own. Often the only way you would get in touch was at the local synth dealer.A spirit of bold improvisation inhabited studios between Geneva and St. Gallen: these artists were articulating pop sensibilities (Air Project, Sky Bird, D-Sire, Peter PhilippeWeiss), entering computer worlds (Claudine Chirac, Olivier Rogg, Carlos Perón), exploring exotic shores (Andreas Hofer, Bells Of Kyoto, Fizzè), building future discothèques (Aborted At Line 6, Carol Rich, UnknownmiX) or finding glacial bliss(Dressed Up Animals, Elephant Château, I Suonatori). The compilation was put together by Matthias Orsett and Maxi Fischer. 'Intenta' unfolds as a sonic story that is laid-back yet energetic, sultry yet daring. The two crate diggers set out to meet with many of the artists arrayed here. Memories wereshared, wine bottles opened. There were moments of sadness: Karl Lienert Löwenherz (Dressed Up Animals) and Claudius Scholer (Sky Bird) passed away during the making of this project. What remains of this journey into the backrooms ofSwiss popular culture, is 'Intenta'. If you listen closely, it will reveal a nation on the move. Beyond the Matterhorn, there is sweetness and light.

The gradual appropriation by the Creole populations of Western instruments and European melodic traditions (quadrilles, waltzes, polkas, Scottish, romances, mazurkas), as well as the cultural contribution of committed workers from India laid thefoundations of the modern sega. This crossroads of influences was to continue to grow, especially from the 1950s, whenthe first phonographs arrived, playing all kinds of varieties but also jazz, soul, rock'n'roll, and even Cuban or Brazilian music. For the sega, these were the first steps towards a period of intense creativity that would cover the 1960s and 1970s. Amplified instruments arrived, and electric guitars, basses, drums and keyboards quickly replaced violins and accordions. Record production exploded and saw the advent of many micro-labels featuring genius arrangers such as Marclaine Antoine, Gérard Cimiotti, Eric Nelson, Claude Vinh San, or Narmine Ducap who explored the sega in its many facets. Psychedelic keyboards, fuzz guitars and undulating basses invited themselves on the furious ternary polyrhythms of drums, ravannes, bongos, claves, triangles and maracas, to produce a unique style. Here are some pearls from this golden age of the segas of Mauritius, Seychelles and Reunion Island that are compiled in this volume 2 for our greatest pleasure!

'SYNTH RAI, CHAOUI & STAIFI, 1985-1997' - Les Disques Bongo Joe and Sofa Records proudly present a compilation of music from Maghreb recorded and produced in Lyon (France) between 1985 and1997. It gathers eight tracks (plus introductions on the vinyl and CD versions) released back then on audio tape - and now for the first time on CD! Most of the musicians featured on this compilation lived in the Rhône-Alpes region - and enlivened its musical life, concentrated in the Guillotière district in thecentre of Lyon. As one of the epicentres of Maghrebian popular music in France's south-west, it is around that square that a real, unofficial, alternative and dynamic musical scene was carried and fostered by a nebula of musicians, publishers, shopowners, restaurants and music cafés. At that time of profuse and emancipated musical crossbreeding, this compilation gives a glimpse of the epoch's vibe and trends - in which traditional songs, local influences and contemporary musical technologies were all mixed together. Throughout the compilation, songs belonging to Algerian popular repertoires are restyled through the use of synthesizers and drum machines, and often sound like pop, funk or disco tunes... Deeply tapped into the daily life of these musicians, they give us a glimpse of the reality of exile and situation of the immigrant, and speak about separation, uprooting, love, as much as social injustices and political events. They belong to the realm of the do-it-yourself, and to a time of unrestrained, free creativity!TRACKS:01. Zaidi El Batni - Malik Ya Malik 02. Nordine Staifi - Zine Ezzinet 03. 'SAO TOME & PRINCIPE SOUNDS 70S-80S'- 'Léve Léve' is the first ever compilation devoted to music from Sao Tomé and Principe, two small islands situated off the coast of Gabon in central Africa. The album unravels a story of liberation where the music of Africa, Europe and the Americas unify with a carefree spirit personified by a phrase the islanders use all the time:"léve, léve" ("take it easy"). With echoes of Angolan semba and merengue, of Brazilian afoxê, of coladeira from Cape Verde and dance music from the Caribbean, it is a sound fiercely proud of its island heritage, sung in local dialects and using distinctive local rhythms. The project was the idea and creation of French DJ and crate digger DJ Tom B who has, for over 20 years been collecting music from Brazil and other Lusophone countries. It was through collecting Angolan music that he was first introduced to the unique island musicof Sao Tomé and Principe, which like Angola, has a long history of slavery and Portuguese colonialism. 'INDIAN OCEAN SEGAS FROM THE 70'S' - In the 17th century slaveswere deported from Africa, Madagascar to the pristineislands of Mauritius, Réunion and the Seychelles in the SouthWestern corner of the Indian Ocean to work on coffee and sugarcane plantations where they gathered secretly to escape theirdaily woes by singing, dancing and beating rhythms. Afro-Malagasy-inspired sega, or (t)chega music was born. During thecourse of the 19th century, the Creole population's gradualadoption of Western instruments and traditional melodies of oldEurope (quadrille, waltz, polka, schottische, romance, mazurka)together with the cultural impact of hired workers from India, laid the foundation for contemporary sega. These crossroads ofinfluences kept expanding, especially in the '50s, when thefirst gramophones hit the market and all sorts of records wereplayed, from pop to jazz, soul, rock and roll, and even Cubanand Brazilian music. For sega music, this hailed the beginningof an intense period of creativity which would linger on intothe '60s and '70s when amplified instruments appeared andviolins and accordions were replaced by electric guitars, bassguitars, drums and keyboards. Psychedelic keyboards, fuzzguitars and bouncy bass lines came to complement themanic ternary polyrhythms of drums, ravannes, bongos, claves, triangles and maracas, and created a unique style.
