Arel, Bulent : Electronic music 1960-1973

Bülent Arel was a Turkish-born American composer of electronicand contemporary classical music. In 1959, following his studies at the Ankara Conservatory, Arel came to the USA on a grant by the Rockefeller Foundation to work at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center. There he met Edgard Varèse with whom (in 1962) he worked on the electronic sections of Varèse's 'Déserts'. Frank Zappa listed Arel as a key influence. Today's electronic music - may it be by Autechre's 'Confield', Aphex Twin's 'Selected Ambient Works Vol. II', or Squarepusher's 'Do You Know Squarepusher' - builds upon a solid foundation which Bülent Arel helped to pave.TRACKS:1. Beinhauer, Miroslav : Pieces for sixth-tone harmonium (2cd)

The only example of a working sixth-tone harmonium in the world belongs to the collections of the National Museum and is permanently exhibited in the CzechMuseum of Music in Prague. Sub Rosa presents here new compositions were written by Phill Niblock, Klaus Lang, Bernhard Lang, Milan Gustar, Judith Berkson, Idin Samimi Mofakham and Ian Mikyska. The premiere of these compositions took place in August 2023 as part of the Ostrava Days contemporary music festival. Performed by pianist Miroslav Beinhauer (*1993) who is recently the only musician in the world who can play this unique instrument.

Chauveau, Sylvain / Pierre-yves Mace : L'effet rebond (2cd)

'L'Effet Rebond' is not one album but two. Two parallel albums sharing the same title. One by Pierre-Yves Macé, the other bySylvain Chauveau - two friends and regular collaborators for nearly twenty years. Both works come from the same original material: guitar, piano, harmonium and vocals, initially recorded by Chauveau. The lyrics in French, English, Japanese are very short poems by or quotations from e.e. cummings, Thelonious Monk, John Cage, Basho, tennis player John McEnroe, Carla Demierre, Aram Saroyan, Joseph Guglielmi and painter Philip Guston. From this common material, each of the two composers has built his own edifice, choosing the elements he keeps, the ones he abandons, adding little by little his own instruments, structures and ideas. In the end, two distinct and autonomous opuses are born.

Die Anarchistische Abendunterhaltung : Die anarchistische abendunterhaltung!

In 1995 the self-titled full-length debut of Die Anarchistische Abendunterhaltung (DAAU) was released. The band consisted of four young, 'classically derailed' musicians who played their own compositions exclusively their with acoustic instruments such as violin, cello, clarinet and accordion. Their work contained influences from Roma music, Eastern European folk, klezmer and jazz, but was performed with the energy, rebelliousspirit and Sturm und Drang of a bona fide punk band. DAAU was part of the fertile Antwerp scene, which also produced dEUS, Zita Swoon and Kiss My Jazz, and soon signed an internationalrecord deal with Sony Classical. The group's influential first record, which has been out of print for a while, is now finally being released again.

Tetsuo Furudate has been working on projects including electronic music, films, videos creating time passages between old and new pieces, re-reading the past through re-appropriations. Milan Knízak's canonical text 'Aktual University', datingfrom 1967, contains ten short lectures outlining the university's character - On Conflict, On Dreams, On Revolutions, On Love, On Belief, On Art, etc. These lectures were to serve as inspirational schemes for lectures, seminars and discussions held at an ideal university. In the first piece, 'Aktual University', Milan Knízak reads his own text, with Opening Performance Orchestra providing the musical accompaniment. It was performed live in October 2019 at the Movement-Sound-Space festival in Opava, where this recording was made. The second track, titled 'Broken Suite', is a studioremix, in which Opening Performance Orchestra used fragments and quotations from Milan Knizák's compositions, conceived over the past fifty years, applying the "broken" method. The majority of them are made public for the very first time in the newly created 'Broken Suite'. The booklet features English translations of ten Aktual University lectures, as well as Milan Knizak's contemporary initiation text.

This album, featuring Milan Knizak, Petr Ferenc (aka Phaerentz) and Opening Performance Orchestra, includes Knizak's 1973 private recording 'Broken Music,' released as a multiple of forty copies by Armin Hundertmark in 1983 on Edition Hundertmark, and a live version of 'Broken Rebroken,' performed in January 2020 at the Museum of Czech Music in Prague by Milan Knizak, Petr Ferenc (aka Phaerentz) and Opening Performance Orchestra. The album comes with a comprehensive 24 page booklet that includes an interview with Milan Knizak on the topic of 'Broken Music,' an extended essay by Petr Ferenc that originally appeared in Czech Music Quarterly, visual documentation from the archives of Maria Knizakova and Opening Performance Orchestra, as well as Anna Bastyrova's photographicdocumentation from the 2020 performance of 'Broken Rebroken.'The cover of the album consists of photographs of Milan Knizak's now-defunct 1963 assemblage. Mastering was done by Stephan Mathieu and Gabriel Séverin, who also made the audio restoration of the archival recording 'Broken Music.'

Opening Performance Orchestra / Laswell / Pop / Burroughs : The acid lands

'The Acid Lands', created by the Prague-based Opening Performance Orchestra, was first performed in 2014 at the Movement-Sound-Space festival in Ostrava, to mark the centenary of William S. Burroughs's birth. The piece was performed live with guests, the theremin player Martina Potuckova, and the poet, musician and performer Pavel Z as the narrator. The studio version of 'The Acid Lands' was recorded in collaboration with Bill Laswell and Iggy Pop, who undertook the role of the narrator. The piece, which pays tribute to William S. Burroughs, features fragments from the novels 'The Western Lands' and 'Junkie'. In addition to the title composition, 'The Acid Lands', the record contains Bill Laswell's instrumental remix, as well as the collective piece 'Naming Seven Souls', featuring samples of William S. Burroughs reading his own work.

Oscillatorial Binnage : Agitations: post-electronic sounds

London-based electroacoustic quartet Oscillatorial Binnage havebeen giving workshops and performing live experimental improvised music together since 2004. The group is comprised of Fari Bradley, Toby Clarkson, Christopher J. Weaver and Daniel Wilson. Characterised by their repurposing of found objects, they began using self-built electromagnetic assemblies in 2007.Oscillatorial Binnage employ everything from springs to woks; from books to ice, to create sounds that entwine the domestic with the industrial, and the scientific with the alchemical. This is reflected in the diversity of spaces in which they have performed, including a subterranean vault, a testing factory, a water tank, a disused bus station, a yurt, a kitchen, churches, ballrooms, caves, aircraft hangars, museums, tunnels, kiosks, sheds, galleries, as well such established venues as The Tate Modern, The Wellcome Trust, The Science Museum, IKLECTIK Art, and Cafe Oto. 'Agitations: Post-Electronic Sounds' constitutes a series of sonic exercises based around one principal philosophy: that systems of electromagnetically-resonated physical objects can lead to complex electronic-sounding tonesthat emerge acoustically, progressing themselves in surprising non-linear dynamic states, providing pointers for further actions upon the objects. Techniques usually associated with electronic music, such as modulation, waveshaping, filtering, etc., are here applied to acoustic physical systems via prods, cranks, levers, gears, and jacks. The bulk of the recordings were made at La Borde Basse/Studio Midi-Pyrénées in 2013, with additional tracks recorded with electromagnetic-force-field resonated oil drums at Alserkal Avenue, Dubai, and upgraded reconstructions of Luigi Russolo's Futurist intonarumori at Mount Pleasant, Clapton. Pousseur, Henri : Parabolic from hell

The sixth release (out of eight) in Sub Rosa's catalog devoted to this composer's experimental and electronic works. It also marks the end of the trilogy on the Parabolic works(following the 1972 unreleased recordings and the 2001 collective performance). This time around, we have a piece built through another major Pousseur work: Lecons d'Enfer (composed in 1990-1991 around Arthur Rimbaud). This previously unreleased version was realized by Henri Pousseur in Cologne in 1992. This release was important to Henri Pousseur, as it concludes, in a sense, the Paraboles trilogy, after 1972's 8 Etudes Paraboliques (released as a 4-CD box set SR174 comprised of all the etudes to be used as the basis for all current and future mixes) and 4 Parabolic Mixes (SR199, 2001, on which four composers - Robert Hampson, Philip Jeck, Markus Popp, and Pousseur himself) tackled those source tapes. This suite of works was gradually pushing composition further into theterritory of destruction and abstraction. This final installment, a mix made from the 1972 Etudes, as should be, integrates a major external element (something already planned in the initial design): another work by Pousseur, Lecons d'Enfer, a complex piece of musical theatre dedicated to the memory of Arthur Rimbaud and composed in 1991 for the centennial of the poet's death. This work, over 100 minutes long, was written for two actors, three singers, seven musicians (clarinet, alto saxophone, tuba, harp, piano, and two percussions), tapes (including traditional Ethiopian music and field recordings from that area), and electroacoustic devices.With this version, Henri Pousseur shows how the deep impression left by a work in constant mutation can take different guises. The Rimbaud pictured in this flux is neither the promising teenager, nor the striking genius, nor even the desperate man struggling in vain in an empty landscape; it is an appeased hybrid breathing the ebullient air of the final times.

This second project released on Sub Rosa by the Japanese artist Kaoru Tashiro, manages to create a subtle dialogue between four composers, and four musical pieces, mixing a delicate blend ofJapanese and European sensibilities. Those different approaches convergence thanks to the highly recognisable sensibility of Kaoru Tashiro's way to play. After 'drifting' through unpublished pieces from Toshi Ichiyanagi (Fluxus) and Claude Ledoux on the album 'Cloud Atlas,' Kaoru Tashiro is now highlighting the works of Kenji Sakai, Claude Ledoux, Jean-Pierre Deleuze and Julia Purgina. Kenji Sakai dilates space through a virtuoso piece, 'Reflecting Space I - Bell, Cloud and Disincarnations,' based on the idea of the metamorphosis of classical repertoires: it is 'Le Gibet' from 'Gaspard De La Nuit' by Maurice Ravel and Gyorgy Ligeti's thoughts on 'micropolyphony' writing. The bell which continues to ring over time, turns into a cloud... Claude Ledoux, already present on the first disc, is wandering through mysterious, disquieting landscapes, that gives pride of place to the hushed sounds coming from the piano strings, hammered and muffled by the imprint of the pianist's fingers. Jean-Pierre Deleuze whom creates through this piano composition a dreamlike space that unfolds. Julia Purgina, a young Austrian composer, whose piecethat was composed in full confinement, turned out to be 'dark,' as she attempted to create an atmosphere of an almost surreal expressivity between exaltation and pessimism. This work has been premiered in Vienna in 2021 and this is a first recording.

The anthology 'Spectra Ex Machina' brings together rare documents pertaining to so-called occult phenomena, most of them taken from little-known archives. In the course of three volumes, this series traces an audio history of parapsychology through the exploration of spiritualism and haunted houses(vol. 1), musician mediums (vol. 2) and experiences of extrasensory perceptions (clairvoyance, psychokinesis, etc.) and electronic voice phenomena (vol. 3). The link between music, sound and the paranormal is manifested in many different ways.
