Andrews, Tim : Something About Suburbia - The Sixties Sounds Of Tim Andrews

Chris Andrews is best known for the six singles he cut for EMI’s Parlophone label between 1967 and 1970 under the name of Tim Andrews. (a name change to avoid confusion with the other singer/songwriter Chris Andrews who was already well established on the music scene). His superb solo recordings – collected here for the first time – represent only part of an eclectic music career that could have only happened in the sixties. Prior to signing to EMI as a solo artist in 1967, Andrews had played the ‘Artful Dodger’ in both the London and New York casts of Lionel Bart’s Oliver, before returning to London in 1965 and doing stints in such seminal mod and freakbeat bands as The Gremlins and Fleur De Lys, as both a singer and guitarist. During his time with Fleur De Lys, Andrews also provided the lead vocal on the highly rated ‘Summer of Love’ single Reflections of Charles Brown, which was issued under the name Rupert’s People. The extraordinary cuts where accompanied by Paul Korda (later of acid folk album‘Passing Stranger’ fame) come on like a Bee Gees / Franki Valli mash up. Something About Suburbia brings together all of the 1966 -1970 solo and group recordings that feature Andrews as lead vocalist and uncovers the fascinating story of one of the most versatile English musicians of the sixties.

Born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, soul/R&B performer Jonathan Butler signed to Jive Records in 1977 and later relocated to the UK, enjoying a high profile and several hit singles and albums across the 1980s. This deluxe 2-CD set includes the singer’s self-titled second LP for Jive. First issued back in 1987, the double-album peaked at No. 12 on the UK charts. This success fuelled the Top 20 success of the single ‘Lies’, a song later nominated for a Grammy. Jonathan Butler has been out-of-print on CD for several years. It’s now not only been remastered but expanded with a bonus disc containing rare non-album songs and versions.

EllenFoley gained high public recognition singing the duet with Meat Loaf on the hit single ‘Paradise by the Dashboard Light’ from the 1977 album Bat out of Hell.Although Karla DeVitois featured on themusic video, DeVito is lip syncing to Foley's vocals. Her debut album Night Outwas released in 1979; the album's single "What's A Matter Baby" was a minor hit, reaching No.92 on the US Charts.The album itself peaked at No.152, and was produced by an Hunter and Mick Ronson. Foley recorded a memorable duet with Ian Hunter in 1980, ‘We Gotta Get Outta Here’. Her creative relationship with Hunter also led her to singing backing vocals on the Iron City House rockers' 1980 album Have a Good Time but Get out Alive!, produced by Hunter, Ronson, and The E Street Band's Steven Van Zandt. She can also be heard on the 1980Blue Öyster Cult album Mirrors singing on the title cut, and also on The Clash album Sandinista! (also released in 1980), in the songs ‘Hitsville UK’ and ‘Corner Soul’, and on the unreleased track ‘Blonde Rock 'n' Roll’. All four members of The Clash appeared on her second album The Spirit of St. Louis in 1981, and Mick Jones and Joe Strummerco-wrote a number of songs for the album.Jones produced the album, which also featured members of The Blockheads, and peaked at No.137 on the US charts. The Clash's hit song ‘Should I Stay or Should I Go’, written and sung by Jones, was about the turbulent relationship he shared with Foley at the time. This timely release was done in conjunction with Ellen who has provided fascinating insights into the recording of both albums. LOVE COMMITTEE started life as The Ethics, forming in 1967 with members Ron Tyson, Joe Freeman, Carl Enlow and Andrew Collins. The Ethics recorded for a number of independent labels and working along the way with people such as Vince Montana Jr. and Thom Bell. As the group underwent various changes in line up, so too did their home to record spending time at Philadelphia International Records, TSOP, Ariola and Gold Mind Records where they would finally settle under the name LOVE COMMITTEE. LOVE COMMITTEE now comprised of Ethics members Ron Tyson and Joe Freeman with the addition Norman Frazier and Larry Richardson and it was under this assemblage that two albums would be released on the Baker-Harris-Young led Salsoul subsidiary and together with the musical guidance of Baker-Harris-Young and songsmith Ron Tyson Love Committee cut their debut album: Law And Order. Prior to the release of Law And Order, Gold Mind Records prepared the single offerings, the first of which was Cheaters Never Win, which achieved an impressive top 60 spot on the US R&B charts while the title track Law And Order, became a huge dance floor hit making it into the R&B top 100 and rocketing all the way to #2 on the US Dance charts. Other notable tracks include the third and final single Tired Of Being Your Fool and funky cut Pass The Buck. BBR is very proud to present the debut album from Love Committee. "Porcelain”, released in 1989, was the multi-platinum follow up to Julia Fordham’s debut, self-titled album. It is the album that broke Julia in the US. It also features a brace of Adult Contemporary radio hits including ‘Manhattan Skyline’ which contributed to exposing Julia to a wider, international audience. Now, for the first time, "Porcelain” has been given the deluxe edition treatment. The album is about to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The album was produced and recorded with legendary producers and musicians including Hugh Padgham (Phil Collins, Sting, XTC) and Dominic Miller (Sting, Peter Gabriel). This 2 CD collection features 20 tracks including the original 11 song configuration and inserts ‘Manhattan Skyline’ into the running order. The song was never included on the original UK release of the album.
