The Luck of Eden Hall pillar Curveys space rock album, Par Crone, sees the light of day for its 15th anniversary. Recorded in Chicago, Par Crone is a tasty, crunchy time capsule nugget not only for 97, but for fans of The Luck of Eden Hall. Par Crones self-titled isnt a dry run for LOEH; its a complete platter birthed from Curveys brain and fingers that stands on its own, but is also a link in the LOEH chain. Where LOEH layers the psych frosting on the rock, Par Crone puts a little more weight on the rock, but the popped psychedelic rock and rollisms are still there. Curveys pop savvy is all over Par Crone, this time in a bit tougher, glossier exterior; a bit stadium rock, think a bit prime Cheap Tricky like guitar on stun and whole lot of riffs. Par Crone certainly sounds of its time with the crunch and the production, but the hooks are there and in true Curvey fashion, theyre sweet, rocking, free of cynicism and stick to your ribs. LOEH isnt disposable in their confections, and neither was Par Crone; the sugar intake, and exhaust, never reaches overdose either. Some of the synths and laser-beam flashes may lock Par Crone to its release date, but a little time travel goes a long way and 15 years later much of it sounds like a breath of fresh air. -Mr. Atavist, Sunrise Ocean Bender

Limited to 200 copies on coloured vinyl. 2011 was the year of 'THE BUTTERFLY' and during that year LUCK OF EDEN HALL released their ambitious magnum opus 'Butterfly Revolutions' as two subsequent volumes seperately on CD. Now these volumes are combined in this stunning DOUBLE vinyl, housed in a majestic 350gms GATEFOLD sleeve, including an insert with lyrics and photo's. Named after a 13th century drinking glass made in Spain that's reputed to be a fairy cup with mystical powers, The Luck Of Eden Hall have been casting their own psychedelic fairy dust over this double-LP. What we have here are 24 'mind-expanding' songs full of '60s influences (from the Beatles and the Byrds to Stones, Love and Floyd) filtered with today's sound. A mix of melodic, dreamy psychedelically catchy tunes that sometimes become a little heavier or more rock-oriented, all dressed with nice vocals, interesting effects and great musicianship. The Luck Of Eden Hall really knows how to write brilliant, melodic, catchy and beautiful pop/rock tunes! Some say they might be at their best on the dreamy, soft ballads but these guys can also rock out with a heavy, fuzz-filled touch and at times they expand into highly psychedelic, hallucinatory worlds.

Chicago is also coincidentally home to a band called The Luck of Eden Hall who have impressed me greatly with their album 'Belladonna Marmalade' (a CD on Walrus Records, no address shown) which our man on the spot Bruce Pates kindly sent in. Their first 45 was on Limited Potential (as was fellow Chicagoans The Smashing Pumpkins's) and they followed it up with a collection called 'Under The Sea' - but 'Belladonna Marmalade' (which is where I came in) is the works alright; exotic guitar pieces, great songs, a dash of mysticism and a whole basketful of psychedelic nuances which all come to a head on 'Mariead' in particular, and which are reflected in the gloriously trippy sleeve-art. I'd go so far as to risk upsetting an awful lot of Terrascope readers by saying I could stomach hearing a lot more of The Luck of Eden Hall than I could the Pumpkins themselves, who I humbly consider sounded 'corporate' even before they became so; anyway the challenge has been thrown down for those of you who'd care to take it up.
