  • Dyer, Tom : X-mas - 30 years in the making

'X-mas: 30 Years In The Making' features the surprisingly popular 'No Lou This Xmas', inspired by the late, great Lou Reed. Written and released one week before Christmas 2013, it was this final brick Dyer needed for this album, recorded sporadically since 1983. Tom Dyer is a Seattle guy with an inconsistent musical predilection, the King of Stylistic Variation. On this album that eclectic appraoch is present in full force. There's a choral number, a rocking Lou Reed tribute, a guitar instrumental, a torch song, a little swing sextet, folky-protest, ska, a sea chanty, some bad country, many guitar solos and of course, the Beach Boys. While much of this is a one man affair, Dyer shows taste and decorum in picking a nice selection of minor Pacific NW music deities to round out the effort, with Gary Minkler from Red Dress, Jeff Kelly of the Green Pajamas and others. Somehow, despite seeming like an unholy mess on paper, it hangs together into a pleasing, (mostly) non-secular holiday adventure.

  • Dyer, Tom : 1+1=?

And now for something different. In this latest rendition of the Tom Dyer Saga we step away from his usual pop/rock meanderings and head deep into left field for something strange and beautiful. '1+1=?' is an album of collaborations. Tom Dyer and mostly one other person, trying to make a sound that is interesting, pure, unfettered. The orchestrated opener 'Everything In The World Is Returning To A State OfNature' started living in Dyer's head in 2004 while riding the commuter train to Boston and looking at rust. A 2017 call to Jim of Seattle finally brought it to vibrant life. The clangorous train-wreck song 'Death At Mounts Road' did not exist in any form until Tom and Amy Denio walked in the recording studio on a January 2018 Saturday morning. More than half of these songs do not have drums. Most are slow. Somesongs were written prior to the collaboration, others like the psycho-matic 'Alaska (Put It In Your Head)' with The OF's John Carey are pure improvisation. Ornette Coleman's 'A Girl Named Rainbow' was purchased as sheet music in 1977 and was the final song recorded for the album, in 2019.

  • Dyer, Tom : I ain't blue anymore

Tom Dyer is a Seattle guy with an inconsistent musical predilection. For I Aint Blue Anymore, his fifth album since 2009 and his eighth overall, he has abandoned some of the eclectism that marked his previous solo work and created his most cohesive album. Dyer: "I thought I was making a blues record all the way, but with covers of The Sonics and Captain Beefheart, Im guessing most people wont think that." Mix those two up with a love for Howlin Wolf, Son House and John Lee Hooker and you can probably stick a fork in this one. This is a one man show. Dyer plays every instrument; he recorded, mixed and mastered the disc. The songs range from things written eons ago that were waiting for the right home to the traditional John The Revelator and this Junes topical There Be Killin (In My Town). According to Rob Lind of The Sonics, "The Witch was written to be slower." Dyer got that psychic telegram and here turns it into a grinding beast. I Aint Blue is a rich and compelling tribute to the influences of Dyers youth that stands on its own two hind legs.
