The idea for Finland’s newest melodic metal sensation Arion was hatched in the fall of 2011 in the famed music school Sibelius Lukio in Helsinki, where drummer Topias Kupiainen and keyboardist Arttu Vauhkonen got together with guitar whiz kid Iivo Kaipainen. In short order, the threesome found bass player Georgi Velinov to round out the band. Some six months later they stumbled upon their vocalistto-
be, Viljami Holopainen, and the line-up was ready to rumble. It took Arion all of one song to get noticed and applauded nationwide.

The band’s first ever recording “Lost In Woods”, a versatile piece of symphonic and melodic metal, was completed in the summer of 2012 and the band sent it to “Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu”, the TV show which determines Finland’s representative for the Eurovision Song Contest. The lyrics for the song were re-written, and freshly named as “Lost” the tune made it from the preliminary qualification round directly to the final stage eventually finishing fifth among a total of 540
participating songs and scored the band some serious air time both on television and radio.

Little did the band of 17- and 18-year-olds know that their first-born song had already stuck a chord within the keen ear of Riku Pääkkönen, the malleus & incus and the business brain behind the international success stories of several Finnish
bands (Children Of Bodom, Nightwish, Sonata Arctica and many more). The recording deal with Ranka Kustannus was signed in May and already in June the band had entered the studio to record their debut EP “New Dawn”.

The EP includes, the UMK competition song “Lost” plus and two others, of which the track “Seven” was chosen to be the first single and released digitally on November 1st, 2013. The platter of just three appetizers is completed with the EP only specialty, the bombastic title song. The “New Dawn” EP saw the streets, sites and shelves on November 22nd as a cd, 12” vinyl and digital release.

Arion have already started tracking their as of yet untitled debut album in October 2013. The album release is expected for mid-2014. Come summer of 2014 the torch, currently held by bands well past their prime, will be passed on to younger, more able hands. For keeps.
