Ragana is a duo whose members alternate duties on drums, guitar and vocals to produce some of the most unique and affecting dark music in metal today. The two-piece came together in 2011 in the DIY punk scene of Olympia, Washington and the band has self-released five albums. On 'Desolation's Flower', Ragana draws upon a number of influences from the flora and fauna of their Pacific Northwest origins to the darkly nostalgic folk of Mt. Eerie and their Olympian forebears Wolves In The Throne Room, synthesising them into an experimental, highly idiosyncratic take on black metal.

Back in print! Hopeton Brown, better known as Scientist, has been a pioneering figure in the world of dub for nearly 40 years. His early love of electronics proved fruitful when (still a teenager) he was hired at King Tubby's studio in Kingston. Brown quickly ascended the ranks and became heir to Tubby's throne, producing imaginative and technically impressive mixes that solidified his forward-looking nickname.Introducing Scientist - 'The Best Dub Album In The World...,' his 1980 debut LP, lives up to its boastful title. Recorded with Sly & Robbie at Channel One Studio and mixed at King Tubby's, the album features hypnotic basslines, reverb-drenched keyboards, and fluid, start-stop rhythms. Opening track 'Steppers,' with its well-balanced phrasing and organic contours, shows Scientist's mastery of the studio-as-instrument concept. On 'Scientific,' the effects-laden guitars are stretched to their outer limit to create magnificent, spaced-out textures and muted tension. Introducing Scientist displays the talents of a man obsessed with every element of production, drawing out the very best of the dub form.

Selecter : Live injection

The Selecter featured a racially diverse line-up and their lyrics featured themes connected to politics. Reinforcing the songs of Neol Davies were the voice and rude girl style of Pauline Black and the rhythms of Desmond Brown on the Hammond organ. The band's name is based on the term "selector", which is a Jamaican word for disc jockey. The band were one of the most successful ska bands of the 2-Tone era, notching up several top forty singles in the British charts. This live album proves their solid live reputation.

Now reissued on vinyl, it's the fabulous 1973 debut-LP by this acclaimed group that was steeped in the grand tradition of Jamaican vocal trios along with other greats such as The Heptones, The Abyssinians and The Kingstonians. 'Silver Bullets' was produced by Lee "Scratch" Perry.

Singers & Players : Staggering heights

Rated by many to be the pinnacle in the Singers & Players' catalogue, this third album from 1983 saw the reggae collective really hitting its stride. On microphone duties, Prince Far I and Bim Sherman are joined by Mikey Dread (fresh from his work with The Clash) and Ashanti Roy (The Congos), forming a truly heavyweight line-up. Voicing killer rhythms laid down by members of the Dub Syndicate and Roots Radics, this is a landmark recording in the mutated UK version of dub. 'Staggering Heights' contains the classic On-U tracks 'Bedward The Flying Preacher' and 'Snipers In The Streets'.
