Nekromantik(1987): Is the one-of-a-kind shock classic from cult director Jörg Buttgereit, weaving the tale of Rob Schmadtke (Daktari Lorenz), a young man who finds himself competing for the affections of his girlfriend with a putrefying cadaver. An employee of Joe’s Streetcleaning Agency, a company which cleans up after grisly accidents, Rob takes advantage of his profession to indulge in his chosen hobby – the collection of body parts. Then, one day, Rob brings home an entire decomposing corpse, much to the delight of girlfriend Betty. There follows a twisted love triangle, resulting in some of the most shocking scenes ever committed to celluloid.
Der Todesking(The King of Death) (1990): The second feature film from German provocateur Jörg Buttgereit, presents seven suicides across seven days of the week. As a chain letter from the self-proclaimed Brotherhood of the 7th Day circulates encouraging its recipients to end their lives, a series of grim murder-suicides unfold. In one vignette, a young woman massacres a room of concert-goers before turning the gun on herself; in another, a man, driven to madness by some unspecified mental disturbance, repeatedly slams his head into a wall before collapsing in a pool of his own blood … These are just some of depictions of death and despair that make up the tortured fabric of Der Todesking.
Nekromantik 2(1991): Monika isn’t like other young women. She shares her small flat with Rob, a recently disinterred corpse which serves as the object of her affections. But then she meets good-natured Mark, and soon finds herself torn between the prospect of a “normal” life with a living, breathing partner and her overwhelming desire for her rotting bed-fellow.
Schramm(1993): Lothar Schramm, the so-called Lipstick Killer, reads dying in a pool of blood and paint. As he expires, fragments of his life flash before his eyes his uneasy friendship with the prostitute that lives next door (Nekromantik 2 s Monika M); the brutal slaughter of a pair of doorstep evangelists whose bodies he poses in obscene fashion; his unhealthy pastime of hammering nails into his own manhood. Told in an entirely non-linear fashion, Jörg Buttgereit s Schramm with its nightmarish hallucinatory sequences involving severed limbs and gaping, sharp-toothed female genitalia comes about as close as a film can get to transporting you directly into the world of a sick, disordered mind.
