Brazilian poet, lyricist, essayist and playwright, Vinicius de Moraes (1913-1980) became a seminal figure in modern Brazilian music and literature. Along with his longtime collaborator, composer, arranger, singer, and pianist/guitarist Antonio Carlos Jobim (1927-1994), known in Brazil as Tom Jobim, he composed hundreds of songs which have become true classics and have transcended the bossa nova, as they continue to be played and recorded by countless singers and instrumentalists within Brazil and throughout the world. This LP set compiles some of the earliest recordings by Vinicius.

Now reissued on 180-GRAM VINYL, Alfredo Linares' 1974 album 'Mu Nuevo Ritmo' is a non-stop salsa dura party album from start to finish. This stuff is comparable to any of New York's finest (think Ray Barretto and Willie Coln), but with its own unique sound and joyful vibe.

Lopez Ruiz, Jorge : Bronca buenos aires

Essential jazz from Argentina, originally released in 1971. 'Bronca Buenos Aires' is one of the highlights in the career of Jorge López Ruiz, alongside 'El Grito' and the much-acclaimed Viejas Raíces project. The album is jazz poem by López Ruiz to the city he loved, not just for its virtues but also its faults, and the recording was an ambitious project that gathered many of the prominent jazz musicians of Buenos Aires. However, due to the repressive political context of the time, 'Bronca Buenos Aires' was not performed live upon its release. The text that accompanies the music, written and narrated by José Tcherkaski, was too daring despite not being directly outspoken against the dictatorship that ruled in Argentina, and broadcasters kept a distance under fear of retaliation by the military establishment. Inexplicably, several later re-releases of 'Bronca Buenos Aires' omitted the spoken word overdubs, reducing the work to an instrumental album and stripping it of half of its beauty and significance. Altercat proudly brings you a new reissue of this essential recording IN FULL, with its original spoken words in Spanish, respecting the original artwork and with an accompanying booklet with an English translation of the texts, including a foreword by José Tcherkaski. Sound sourced from the master tapes, and caringly mastered by Pablo López Ruiz.

Bogotá-based Colombian composer Eblis Alvarez, known as Meridian Brothers, has been concocting a unique blend of psychedelic sounds since 1998. Drawing inspiration from African highlife and soukous traditions, Alvarez crafts a fearless sonic experiment infused with invention, playfulness, and emotion. Unlike typical tropical guitar records, this album eschews distortion and clichés, opting for a pure, clean approach. Through intricate compositions blending cumbia, champeta, soukous, Brazilian tropicalia, and underground psychedelic rock, Alvarez pays homage to the golden era of Congolese rumba, Ghanaian highlife, and Nigerian Afrobeat. 'Mi Latinoamérica Sufre' delves into the ego trip, presenting a humorous yet introspective journey of self-discovery and identity. The central character, Junior Maximiliano the Third, navigates through the complexities of self-discovery using psychedelic substances, political philosophy, and folklore. As he grapples with nostalgia, paranoia, and shared suffering, Alvarez showcases his vocal prowess, creating a sonic theater of the mind. Accompanied by visual narratives from Colombian artist Mateo Rivano, the album portrays various psychological states of disorientation, self-pity, enlightenment, and optimism. 'Mi Latinoamérica Sufre' emerges as a worthy and innovative addition to the concept album tradition, offering a distinctive blend of bitter-sweet flavors inspired by Latinoamérica.
