The first signing on Is it Jazz? Records, the sub-label of Karisma Records, is the Norwegian instrumental quartet Soft Ffog. What it would sound like if Jimi Hendrix joined Deep Purple pursuing to sound like Gentle Giant, and then failing miserably because of too much jazz influences? Soft Ffog's sound draws parallels to the aforementioned acts in some similar style, but is more rooted in jazz with their prolonged solos and improvisations. Comes on limited orange vinyl.

"To understand the significance of the word 'featuring' on 'Featuring Pharoah Sanders And Black Harold,' consider how infrequently Sun Ra used it and the exact way it had been used."The October Revolution in Jazz, organized by Bill Dixon in the West Village in 1964, presented a vivid cross section of approaches to the new music, including a sextet led by Ra. For the October Revolution's continuation, titled Four Days in December, held at nearby Judson Hall on the last days of 1964, the Arkestra performance presented Pharoah Sanders as well as a flautist (who was and remained obscure thereafter) named Harold Murray, nicknamed Black Harold. "It wasn't until long after Sanders had achieved worldwide acclaim with John Coltrane that Ra and manager Alton Abraham decided to issue the music they'd recorded at Judson Hall. After its first release in plain or hand-decorated covers in 1976, Featuring Pharoah Sanders And Black Harold remained an exceptionally rare item in the El Saturn discography, known to a few lucky collectors. "We're lucky to have this glimpse of what Sanders sounded like in such a different context, galvanizing the large group and in turn being inspired to make his first significant contribution on record." Long-awaited reissue of this album by the famous Hungarian guitarist, originally released in 1969. "Gabor Szabo exploded onto the American jazz scene in the early sixties. His unusual approach and unique sound brought something startling and new to jazz. With Chico Hamilton, Charles Lloyd and Gary McFarland, Szabo offered something few in jazz had ever heard before: guitarist as enchanter and conjurer and musician as storyteller and mesmerist. Once Szabo declared his independence in 1966, he also proved how seamlessly jazz can blend the Beatles and Bacharach with Latin and Indian styles. The guitarist released a string of albums on Impulse that challenged many assumptions about jazz and stand out today as some of the most radical, yet appealing music of the period. But the times were woefully a-changing. Szabo biographer Károly Libisch considers the year 1969 a "turning point" for the guitarist. The spell Szabo weaved in the press was beginning to wane. The blizzard of coverage he generated in the previous few years began to trickle off. Perhaps the rise of rock -and rock-guitar heroes- tamped down the guitarist's exotic allure and faddish charm.Then, too, Szabo's erratic behavior started attracting poor notice and hastened the demise of his storied quintet, featuring guitarist Jimmy Stewart and percussionist Hal Gordon, in late 1968. Now, both Gabor Szabo, the artist, and businessman, needed a hit. '1969' was his response to the call of 1969. The album was released in August 1969, and initial reviews were positive. Cash Box raved that Gabor Szabo's '1969' "is magnificent music and an album that deserves great success" while Record World called it "luscious guitaring" that features "lots of contemporary material, which he makes completely his own." Gabor Szabo's '1969' never did find the success it was seeking. But it remains a lovely listening experience that finds the guitarist at his melodic best at an important crossroads in his recording career."

Szun Waves : Earth patterns (black)

The members of Szun Waves may not have been collectively in the same country, let alone room, for over two years, but that has not prevented them from realising their third album, 'Earth Patterns'. The trio - comprised of producer Luke Abbott, saxophonist Jack Wyllie (Portico Quartet) and drummer Laurence Pike (Triosk/PVT/Liars) - recorded the album sessions together at the tail end of their 2019 European tour, locking themselves away in the studio for three days of improvisation. They emerged with hours of music, some inspired by their live shows, most born fresh in the studio itself, ready to be moulded into the group's third album in five years.

Prior to that Terry had recorded a couple of soul jazz albums for Prestige Record, 'Electric Soul' in 1967 and 'Natural Soul' in 1968. He then went under the radar until the recording of this sublime album, an undisputed treasure featuring Stanley Cowell (p), Buster Williams, Victor Gaskin (dr), Roland Prince (gt) Cecil Bridgewater (tp) and Mtume (perc).

Urban Sax : Urban sax 2

Urban Sax was founded in 1973 by French experimental musician Gilbert Artman, a.o. the mastermind behind Lard Free. Driven by his interest in the relation between space and sound, he experimented with large groups of saxofonists, varying from 16 to 34 players, at times also including bass players, percussionists, vocalists and even dancers. An early experiment took place in the French village of Menton, where Artman placed the musicians on rooftops, in various streets, on squares, and in gardens. Though the total experiences of these experiments/events can't be captured on whatever sound carrier, several recordings were made through the years. 1978's album 'Urban Sax 2', again on Czanne/Cobra, is the continuation of the debut-LP. It features parts 2 and 3 of the pieces contained on 'Urban Sax 1', and shows similarities to the music of La Monte Young, Phil Niblock, Glenn Branca, Steve Reich and Terry Riley. This reissue comes with remastered sound and a booklet offering rare pix and liner notes by Artman himself.
