Acda, Chantal -& Eric Thielemans- : A new score for koyaanisqatsi

Dark-folk songwriter Chantal Acda and beyond drums-percussion musician extraordinaire Eric Thielemans propose a new score for 'Koyaanisqatsi,' re-actualising the incredibly beautiful, raw, rhythmic and touching images of this '80s cinematographic masterpiece. Slow deep electric waves, lonely synths in sonic desert landscapes, rhythmic pulses, transporting drums and bells, and deeply longing sounds and voices make up the audible fundamentals of this imagined, neo shamanic, ritualistic music to accompany the Earth as it keeps on supporting our post human frenetics even today. This release contains a selection of the musical material scored for a live performance together with the screening of the movie. The live performance premiered on Film Festival Gent and Vooruit in the fall of 2022.

Arel, Bulent : Electronic music 1960-1973

Bülent Arel was a Turkish-born American composer of electronicand contemporary classical music. In 1959, following his studies at the Ankara Conservatory, Arel came to the USA on a grant by the Rockefeller Foundation to work at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center. There he met Edgard Varèse with whom (in 1962) he worked on the electronic sections of Varèse's 'Déserts'. Frank Zappa listed Arel as a key influence. Today's electronic music - may it be by Autechre's 'Confield', Aphex Twin's 'Selected Ambient Works Vol. II', or Squarepusher's 'Do You Know Squarepusher' - builds upon a solid foundation which Bülent Arel helped to pave.TRACKS:1. Bakla, Peter : Late night show

All my music is night music, says the composer Petr Bakla. The three pieces featured on the album 'Late Night Show' span almost a decade and provide varied examples of his style, "so specific and personal, so allergic to fashion or aesthetic trend," as Eric Wubbels puts it in the insightful liner notes.The central instrument is the piano, operated by Bakla's longtime collaborator Miroslav Beinhauer, accompanied by the musicians of Brno Contemporary Orchestra.

Berrocal, Jac : Mdlv

Lots of guests too. Jacques "Jac" Berrocal (born 22 October 1946, Saint-Jean d'Angly) is a French trumpeter, singer and composer. He has been active since the 1970s in the independent and avant-garde music scene (he recorded/played with Steven Stapleton/Nurse With Wound and collaborated with Sunny Murray, Pascal Comelade, MKB (F.J. Ossang), James Chance, Alan Shorter, Bernard Vitet, Lol Coxhill, Michel Portal, Lizzy Mercier Descloux). He has released a few important albums, mainly on his own label d'Avantage. He also founded and performed in the group Catalogue. Berrocal has appeared too in several films.

Book Of Air: Vvolk : Se (in) de bos

As in the first Book Of Air album 'Fieldtone' and the second 'Vvolk', the parameters time and sound are again widely present. This time the 3 interwoven bass lines give the deep drive and foundation of the sound, completed with a layer of acoustic instruments and sparkling chords on top. Bow : Bow

Brussels-based string quintet BOW celebrates musical freedom. Juggling between their own written music and pure improvisation, the ensemble has worked since its creation on a personal and modern approach, digging into their instruments' capabilities and blending a large scope of influences. Its debut eponym LP gathers five instantly-composed pieces that were recorded live by Christine Verschorren in the EchoCollective studio in Brussels. During the day, BOW repeated musical concepts, textures, and interactive games. Then, during the night, with the machine already well-oiled and the musicians free of all expectations, the ensemble embarked out into the unknown, discovering with wonder unexplored sonic territories, delivering a deep and profound music woven with five strands of yarn.

Burgess, Anthony : Conversations with the anthony burgess...

Anthony Burgess's second wife Liana carried a cassette recorder with her at all times to capture her life with the author and their son Andrew.This extraordinarily intimate audio archive of over 1,000 cassettes now sits with the International Anthony Burgess Foundation and artist Alan Dunn has been granted access to select excerpts from it and curate sonic conversations from others. The album contains the very first and last knownrecordings of Burgess's voice alongside domestic incidents, rehearsals and answering machine messages.

Die Anarchistische Abendunterhaltung : Die anarchistische abendunterhaltung!

In 1995 the self-titled full-length debut of Die Anarchistische Abendunterhaltung (DAAU) was released. The band consisted of four young, 'classically derailed' musicians who played their own compositions exclusively their with acoustic instruments such as violin, cello, clarinet and accordion. Their work contained influences from Roma music, Eastern European folk, klezmer and jazz, but was performed with the energy, rebelliousspirit and Sturm und Drang of a bona fide punk band. DAAU was part of the fertile Antwerp scene, which also produced dEUS, Zita Swoon and Kiss My Jazz, and soon signed an internationalrecord deal with Sony Classical. The group's influential first record, which has been out of print for a while, is now finally being released again.

Digital Dance : Digital dance 002

After the album 'Total Erasement' that includes the more 'professional' studio recordings of the band, this new record is the re-release of their last cassette tape, reflecting another side of their work and the beginnings of what was to come. Not only songs but more experimental music, a work based on improvisation up to change parts of the musicians (e.g., guitarist on the drums and vice versa, reviving the very beginnings of the band). The sound was remodelled and mastered in 2017.

DJ Spooky : Sound unbound

Ferrari, Luc & Brunhild : Programme commun (2cd)

These two volumes are being released together and simultaneously, as a sign of continuation. For Luc Ferrari, this is the first full-length CD to come out after the trilogy Sub Rosa developed with him. Les anecdotiques/2002, a fifteen-part suite / CD SR207, Son Mémorise /1976-2002 CD SR252, Didascalies/SR259, 2007, CD SR259. What we have here is three substantial pieces: Programme commun pour clavecin et bande magnetique/1972 performed by Elisabeth Chonacka, Didascalies/1993 performed by Jean-Philippe Collard-Neven,Claude Berset, and Vincent Royer (in 2009) and availableonly on vinyl/SRV305. (note that Didascalies and Didascalies 2 are two different compositions), and another previously unreleased piece that he held dear: Les emois d'Aphrodite/1986-1998, performed by San Francisco's MC Band under his direction. Sub Rosa are pleased to release for the first time, the solo works of Brunhild Ferrari: Derivatif/2008Brumes du reveil/2009, Tranquilles Impatiences/2010. Forming a trilogy on reconstruction from a memory that is still quite alive. To us, these works are new bricks in the erection of a liberating oeuvre.

Frith, Fred -& Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles- : Something about this landscape for ensemble

From his early days with Henry Cow, Fred Frith was seen as a brilliant instrumentalist and improviser, but what has been overlooked is what a first-rate composer he is. This recording offers both aspects. His most complex orchestral composition and two selected improvisations with the Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles. Fred Frith, as an infusion of energy and inspiration. "Something about this Landscape was commissioned by Ars Musica in 2018. I composed the piece during a residencyat Lou Harrison's straw-bale house in the desert at JoshuaTree, California. It's an inspiring place for a number of reasons - the silence, the light, the life, the history. The extraordinary diversity of birds during the migration season.Both other pieces are improvisations. Furudate, Tetsuo : The nocturne, the nightmare and a fruit

Tetsuo Furudate has been working on projects including electronic music, films, videos creating time passages between old and new pieces, re-reading the past through re-appropriations. All his recent pieces can be watched or just listened to. it is also a cultural mix embracing all eastern and western cultures (from JS Bach to Merzbow). Here he recreates a borderless and timeless universe, where voices and pianos reach emotional moments of great depth. The whole is driven by Tetsuo who, by a continuous mixing, conceives these different pieces as an editor would a film made of borrowings images, archives material and unpublished fragments. FeaturingKeiko Higuchi: She is above all a pianist and performer, linked to jazz and improvisation. She was revealed by Love Hotel (2008), her concerts are like real performances, she is considered as one of the most singular and impressive performing artists of her generation. Also featuring Olga Magieres, a Russian pianist living in Denmark, who specializes in improvised music and the syntactic relationship of languages. She has already collaborated with Tetsuo in 2010 with 'Introduction Of Blue Of Noon', her first opus 'Piano And Poetry' had been praised.

Hastings Of Malawi : Axial incidents (the x-mas album)

Finally and just in time for Christmas 2020 Hastings Of Malawi release their third LP - the antithesis of Christmas albums.In this bleak vinyl mid winter the sleigh bells have been replaced with twelve handsaws, two motors and a dustbin, a duet between a walrus and an autistic child on an aeroplane, a chorus of pigs and Tasmanian devils, sounds from Japan, China, Africa, Italy, India and Hawaii, digital voice synthesis, sound sculptures, randomly generated music, geiger counters, free improvisation and a rocket engine. As with their first two albums this record continues to explore themes of communication and communication breakdown. Is communication possible? What is the message? What is sound? What is on the surface of a record?What is beneath the surface of a record? Hastings Of Malawi provide the answer to these questions in the form of a 38 minute poem called 'Axial Incidents'.

Knizak, Milan -ft. Opening Performance Orchestra- : Aktual univerzita

Milan Knízak's canonical text 'Aktual University', datingfrom 1967, contains ten short lectures outlining the university's character - On Conflict, On Dreams, On Revolutions, On Love, On Belief, On Art, etc. These lectures were to serve as inspirational schemes for lectures, seminars and discussions held at an ideal university. In the first piece, 'Aktual University', Milan Knízak reads his own text, with Opening Performance Orchestra providing the musical accompaniment. It was performed live in October 2019 at the Movement-Sound-Space festival in Opava, where this recording was made. The second track, titled 'Broken Suite', is a studioremix, in which Opening Performance Orchestra used fragments and quotations from Milan Knizák's compositions, conceived over the past fifty years, applying the "broken" method. The majority of them are made public for the very first time in the newly created 'Broken Suite'. The booklet features English translations of ten Aktual University lectures, as well as Milan Knizak's contemporary initiation text.

Kosmose : First time out

A previously unreleased mid-'70s recording from the Belgian cosmic project Kosmose, featuring Alain Neffe, Francis Pourcel and Daniel Malempré. The trio's music blends cosmic sounds with experimental and noisy tendencies. Presented here is one long-stretched 36-minute track, spread over two sides.

Laet, Joris -de- : Experimental & parametric music 1976-2017 (2lp)

Belgian musician Joris De Laet was born in 1947, and was a self-taught artist and music and art video composer. De Laet is the founder of the SEMensemble, a group of musicians-composers specialized in performing experimental music and live electronics. Through 'Experimental & Parametric Music 1976-2017', more than 40 years of De Laet's works are unveiled, from 'Signalisations' (1976) to 'Mnemosyne Pour Une Acousmaman' (2017). The twelve compositions are explained in detail by the composer.

As Asher Gamedze puts it in his essay: "Abstract territories of freedom, always grounded, expansive, multiple, internally differentiated, and elephantine." Maggi, Phil : The encrimsoned

Sound architect and filmmaker from Liège, Belgium Phil Maggi is known as the lead singer of heavy-rock combo Ultraphallus. He has shared the bill with Jerusalem In My Heart, Keith Rowe, Phill Niblock, Tuxedomoon, Sote, Thisquietarmy, and many others. 'The Encrimsoned' is the second part of his diptychinspired by Henry Corbin's writings, which started with his previous album 'Animalwrath' (Sub Rosa SR423). 'The Encrimsoned' is a four-track album, harboring a few musical friends and usual collaborators (Maja Jantar, Tom Malmendier, Radwan Ghazi Moumneh, Sebastien Schmit, Gabriel Séverin, Xavière Fertin). Ranging from free-jazz to ambient-electroniccontemporary art sound, this adventurous second and final chapter is an homage to Hardy Fox, pioneer and primary composer for The Residents.

Moore, Anthony / Dirk Specht / Tobias Grewenig : The april sessions

This journey, this slowly drifting sonic meditation,is an 'inner soundscape', a dialogue between the senses,the conscience and the world, inside/outside, interconnected.Like waking up from a long dream, and being stuck into itsecho. The April Sessions immerges the listener into a drone-ishuniverse, full of random acousmatic events, inner monologuesand a vast and unwritten subjective map to be drawn. Anthony Moore (Slapp Happy, Henry Cow), Dirk Specht and Tobias Grewenig have known each other and worked together since the early 2000s. They have collectively participated in a number of projects including live performances and recordings. In 2016, as part of The Missing Present Band, they released the live LP 'The Present Is Missing' on A-Musik. The following year theyreleased 'Ore Talks', a double LP, realised in collaboration with Therapeutische Hörgruppe Köln.

Ogives : La memoire des orages (2lp)

At the border of genres, Ogives is an ambitious musical project, initiated and led by composer and musician Pavel Tchikov. This large ensemble leads us onto a path to a sacred universe, to a cathedral ofsounds, whose foundationsare rock and classical music. Born in Liège (Belgium), Ogives offers a resolutely intense personal and poetic work, dominated by layers of melodious, polyphonic, shouted or lyrical voices.This first album from Ogives, 'La Mémoire Des Orages' (The Memory of Storms), is build and orchestrated around poems written by two members of the group. These texts revolve around the themes of the perception of time and the perspective ofdeath. We find here all the group's influences, ranging from post-rock, prog to contemporary music, baroque and medieval music, through electronic music and noise, all exploited to forge a homogeneous and singular material. From the first choral notes to the last sharp riff, it is a dense and melancholic epic, carried by inhabited and versatile musicians. The album was mixed by Steve Albini.

Oiseaux-tempete : Tarab

'Tarab' is the result of live recordings captured during the 'Al-'An!' tour which led the group, after a preliminary residency at l'Autre Canal in Nancy, to cross Europe and into Canada, performing at the prestigious festival Le Guess Who? in Utrecht, opening for Suuns & Jerusalem In My Heart in Montreal and Toronto, following the same Jerusalem In My Heart through France then from Brussels to Berlin, and finally closingthe loop at the Irtijal festival in Beirut. The studio pieces are here stretched, deconstructed and rearranged while new works from the road find unique musical settings, weaved, twisted and reimagined. Marrying free-rock, organic electronics, traditional instruments and unbridled electricity, 'Tarab', far beyond the vibrant testimony, is a generous invitation to experience, to meditate and to share.

Opening Performance Orchestra / Laswell / Pop / Burroughs : The acid lands

'The Acid Lands', created by the Prague-based Opening Performance Orchestra, was first performed in 2014 at the Movement-Sound-Space festival in Ostrava, to mark the centenary of William S. Burroughs's birth. The piece was performed live with guests, the theremin player Martina Potuckova, and the poet, musician and performer Pavel Z as the narrator. The studio version of 'The Acid Lands' was recorded in collaboration with Bill Laswell and Iggy Pop, who undertook the role of the narrator. The piece, which pays tribute to William S. Burroughs, features fragments from the novels 'The Western Lands' and 'Junkie'. In addition to the title composition, 'The Acid Lands', the record contains Bill Laswell's instrumental remix, as well as the collective piece 'Naming Seven Souls', featuring samples of William S. Burroughs reading his own work.

Palestine, Charlemagne : From etudes to cataclysms for the..

...DOPPIO BORGATO' - After the epiphany of An Aural Symbiotic Mystery by Charlemagne Palestine and Tony Conrad (SR204) this is the first solo work by Charlemagne on Sub Rosa - the first but probably not the last - because we would like not only to release some new important material like this one - but re-release too a series of his classic works (most of them, unfortunately, are unavailable). From Etudes to a Cataclysms is one of the most important work 'till this day. An impressive composition of more than 140 minutes based on an unique instrument - a double piano on which one keyboard is played by the feet. Comes in 8 pages digipack.

Palo Alto : Difference and repetition (2lp)

'A MUSICAL EVOCATION OF GILLES DELEUZE' - This album (the tenth in Palo Alto's discography) was born from two ambitions: to pay tribute to Soft Machine's 'Third' on form (4 sides/4 titles) and to philosopher Gilles Deleuze ('Difference And Repetition' is the title of his thesis) on the contents. The 4 long pieces of this double concept album were developed over 2 years and each has a different style and climate. Bold and kaleidoscopic, 'Difference And Repetition' perfectly synthesizes the musical and literary obsessions of Palo Alto. Formed in Paris in 1989, Palo Alto released its first album (a cassette) on the Italian label Old Europa Cafe in 1990. The band is now composed of Jacques Barbéri (also a science fiction author), Laurent Pernice (ex-member of the French industrial band Nox) and Philippe Perreaudin (also coordinator of several compilations and reissues: Legendary Pink Dots, Un Département, Nino Ferrer Revisited, Ptôse, Hardy Fox). Literature, and particularly science fiction, is a leitmotiv in the band's work. Antoine Volodine, Thomas Pynchon, Philip K. Dick, Lewis Carroll or J.G. Ballard have been invoked many times. In recent years, Palo Alto has multiplied musical collaborations with, among others, The Residents, Ptôse, Klimperei and Tuxedomoon. From industrial music to inextricable electronic ramifications, by making a detour through improvisation, the musical universe of Palo Alto is multifaceted. There's even the odd suggestion of a pop tune here and there, maybe even some danceable beats; if you've got one leg shorter than the other.

Redolfi, Michel : Sonic waters - underwater music 1979-1987

With the 'Sonic Waters' project initiated in 1978, Michel's aim was to situate field of electronic music within a liberating and futuristic experience, outside the concert halls and in sync with the development of new instruments - in particular the Synclavier digital synthesizer. Michel developed the aesthetic and technical elements that would contribute to the conception of 'Underwater Music'. Numerous performances would follow in natural sites or in large public pools such as those of Sydney, Paris or Venice during the 2006 Biennale.

Silk Saw : Everything's starts

Since the early '90s, the Belgian duo Silk Saw has pioneerednearly unclassifiable electronic music at the forefrontof experimental and avant-garde. Their 12th album is a contiguous expansion of the universe created in 'Imaginary Landscapes', the previous album published on Kotä in 2015, blending sweet and bitter in languorous and enigmatic melodies that float on intriguing pounding polyrhythms. With the release of 'Nothing is Finished' (LP title 'Everything Starts') on Sub Rosa, Marc Medea and Gabriel Séverin are back home, since their very first trial, 'Musique Du Garrot Et De La Feraille' -under their strange 'modern dada' alias, Jardin d'Usure - wasreleased in 1994 (followed by the first two Silk Saw albumsfrom 1996 and 1997). Now more than ever, without compromise, the duo makes full use of complex tools like Frequency Modulation, granular and morphing synthesis. In an array of delightful to jarring surprises, a sinuous ballad will be troubled with remote blasts, or abruptly interrupted by a collapse of the base. Ata 'Sote' Ebtekar composes music with a deeply-held convictionthat rules and formulas should be deconstructed and rethought.He alters musical modal codes from their original tonality andrhythmic tradition to achieve vivid, synthetic soundscapes. This album is an all electronic affair, harmonically maximalist, predominantly symphonic-synthetic, requiring activelistening. Some pieces function as challengers of musical structural habits, provoking the short attention span culture, others present a problem-solution scenario, collectively viaa neoteric noise aesthetic and detailed melodic weaving. Tashiro, Kaoru -performs Sakai / Ledoux / Deleuze / Purgina- : Miragique

This second project released on Sub Rosa by the Japanese artist Kaoru Tashiro, manages to create a subtle dialogue between four composers, and four musical pieces, mixing a delicate blend ofJapanese and European sensibilities. Those different approaches convergence thanks to the highly recognisable sensibility of Kaoru Tashiro's way to play. After 'drifting' through unpublished pieces from Toshi Ichiyanagi (Fluxus) and Claude Ledoux on the album 'Cloud Atlas,' Kaoru Tashiro is now highlighting the works of Kenji Sakai, Claude Ledoux, Jean-Pierre Deleuze and Julia Purgina. Kenji Sakai dilates space through a virtuoso piece, 'Reflecting Space I - Bell, Cloud and Disincarnations,' based on the idea of the metamorphosis of classical repertoires: it is 'Le Gibet' from 'Gaspard De La Nuit' by Maurice Ravel and Gyorgy Ligeti's thoughts on 'micropolyphony' writing. The bell which continues to ring over time, turns into a cloud... Claude Ledoux, already present on the first disc, is wandering through mysterious, disquieting landscapes, that gives pride of place to the hushed sounds coming from the piano strings, hammered and muffled by the imprint of the pianist's fingers. Jean-Pierre Deleuze whom creates through this piano composition a dreamlike space that unfolds. Julia Purgina, a young Austrian composer, whose piecethat was composed in full confinement, turned out to be 'dark,' as she attempted to create an atmosphere of an almost surreal expressivity between exaltation and pessimism. This work has been premiered in Vienna in 2021 and this is a first recording.

After the release of the 'Anthology of Turkish Experimental Music 1961-2014' (Sub Rosa SR390), this series of recordings unveils the diverse creativity of young Turkish female artists.The majority of these compositions have been crafted within the last three years. The anthology presents works from 15 Turkish female artists, each contributing to the album's beauty through their multifaceted creations. It encompasses various styles, ranging from purely formal music to innovative electronica, incorporating remnants of Turkish harmonies, as well as pieces with conceptual or political undertones, varying in intensity from subtle to overt.

...Bob's Barn'. Limited 500. Although it stems from the same artistic process as Volume One in the 'Doctor Boogie presents' series, this is not Volume Two of a series devoted to Bob Hite. The process WAS different in that here I focused on much moreobscure tracks taken from the very small portion of what remains of the collection of 78rpms owned by the late and legendary Bob Hite. The collection of this boogie music ogre reached 20,000 78rpms in 1968. However, toward the end of his life, Hite was forced to sell chunks of his treasure to pay off debts, and the leftovers were literally pillaged after hisdeath.Canned Heat's drummer Fito de la Para managed to salvage a tiny slice of this collection. The first compilation album devoted to Bob Hite's records focused on a handful of Blues giants, including six titles from Elmore James' repertoire. Here, since there will be no sequel, I decided to pack as much music as I could on 2 LPS vinyl. I didn't want to alter the dynamics of these fabulous 78rpms, so I opted for only a very light mastering, keeping the inevitable audio defects, artifacts and surface noise occasionally heard on the tracks that were more damaged. Bob 'The Bear' Hite was a crucial part of the West Coast Blues revival of the late 60's. Along with fellow musicologist Alan 'Blind Owl' Wilson, he helped formed the first incarnation of the legendary Canned Heat as a jug band. Their performances at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival and the 1969 Woodstock Festival put them on the map as true bluesmen seeking to revitalize an art form. Hite toured nonstop with Canned Heat and performed as the group's barrel-housinglead singer until his death of a heart attack on April 5, 1981. He helped revitalize the careers of John Lee Hooker, Sunnyland Slim and Albert Collins, and produced the now legendary Hooker and Heat double album in 1971. Those recordings of Gongs Orchestras were made during Funeral Ceremonies in two Kung villages and one Jaraï village inRatanakiri province, Cambodia by Laurent Jeanneau (Kink Gong) in 2003 and 2004, at a times when jungle had not been replaced by rubber plantations. Focusing on funeral's ceremonies,those hypnotic pieces are intense and haunting harmonics sonic experiments.
