Latest in Greensleeves’ Evolution Of Dub series, this one is devoted to the seminal dub albums produced by Winston Edwards. In 1974 Edwards left Jamaica to reside in the UK and through his strong connections with such reggae luminaries as Joe Gibbs, Lee Perry and King Tubby began to travel back and forth between London and Kingston (JA) to bring back recordings to issue on his Fay Music label here in the UK. In 1974 he issued his first dub album, the long unavailable Natty Locks Dub featuring rhythms built at Lee Perry’s Black Ark and Joe Gibbs new studio with overdubs done in the UK. He followed this with the controversial seminal dub set King Tubby Meets The Upsetter At The Grassroots Of Dub, shunned by some at the time due to the spurious marketing device employed. The whole album appears in fact to have been mixed at Tubby’s, while the rhythms were possibly built at Perry’s Ark and maybe Gibbs’ studio, but at this length memories are stretched. Now of course, it sounds like what it is, a classic early Tubby’s dub album, musical, tuneful, heavy dubwise set with Vin Gordon’s unique trombone lines well to the fore. King Tubby Surrounded By The Dreads At The National Arena always seemed to promise more than it actually delivered, billed as being a selection of the tracks supposedly played by the King to re-establish his supremacy at a big event at Kingston’s National Arena alongside a performance by The Wailers, but can now be heard as a great set of dubs and vocals. Finally, Dub Conference pits Winston’s Studio 17 rhythm tracks against the mixing skills of the great Dennis ‘Blackbeard’ Bovell featuring dubs to Brown Sugar’s Black Pride, Glen Sloley’s version of All That Glitters and others, pulling out all the stops on some mind shattering mixing. Essential dub.
