Awake Percussion is a Helsinki-based group formed in 2016 by four of the most talented Finnish percussionists of their generation. The quartet is known for its extensive repertoire and breathtaking live performances. In this premiere recording, the group focuses its energy on the percussion works of American-born percussionist-composer Tim Ferchen. The album gives a taste of the various influences that Ferchen has been exposed to during a career spanning over 50 years: from the sound world of the old masters to the rhythmic and harmonic drive of the music of Steve Reich, in whose ensemble he performed and recorded for many years. After moving to Finland, a 35-year stay with the Finnish Radio Orchestra and an active role in chamber music completed his education. The works on this recording, rich in color, texture, and above all, rhythm, are performed to a perfection in the hands of Awake Percussion. Each piece reflects a different sonic percussion element from pure non-tonal to mallet ensembles and music with combined percussion and pre-recorded audio. Three of the compositions have been premiered by Awake Percussion, and the fourth, “Masquerades”, was written especially for them.
