Onyeabor, William : Anything You Sow
Available for the first time as individual vinyl LP. William Onyeabor's records came one after another, almost every year: Crashes in Love 1977, Atomic Bomb 1978, Tomorrow 1979, Body and Soul 1980, Great Lover 1981, Hypertension 1982, Good Name 1983, Anything You Sow 1985. After Anything You Sow, his most successful album, he stopped making records. Anything You Sow, is pretty religious as it is but he felt that he wasn't direct enough in his proselytizing, (I am paraphrasing here what he has said) It is also his most electronic. And interestingly enough it sounds the most like the new album he is working on for us due out sometime... next year? Who knows.

Onyeabor, William : Crashes in Love (2nd Version)
Available for the first time as individual vinyl LP. This is the second version of Crashes in Love. The songs are similar enough that when we were mastering the compilation, we sent the stereo first version of Crashes out to be cleaned and we got back this mono version from someone who had both We couldn't figure out how cleaning an album turned a stereo record into a mono one. We didn't notice that the stereo album has five songs and this one has four, dropping off the instrumental "Jungle Gods". And though the songs on both albums sound similar, they are not the same. Uchenna, who originally licensed the tracks for us said that Onyeabor had mentioned that he lost the masters for the first album. So I wonder, did he rerecord the record from the record he originally made, shortened the tracks, and added some parts?

Onyeabor, William : Great Lover
Available for the first time as individual vinyl LP. Have you guys been checking out the different Onyeabor covers? It always seems he was playing a role with each one. As someone who never wanted to talk about himself, even back when he made these albums perhaps that was a way for him to further obscure who he really was. As we have said before, though we do talk to him almost every week, we never get the impression that his aversion to talking about his music making days has changed much. Enjoy.

Available for the first time as individual vinyl LP. I think what you will find as we go through the whole William Onyeabor catalog, is how great it is. How many artists can release eight great or pretty great albums. It is really something we have been impressed by as we have learned more and more about what he issued and the circumstances, such as we have been able to learn, about when he released these albums. Original release 1979.

Available for the first time as individual vinyl LP. Body and Soul, this album has my favorite track that we did not include on the Who Is William Onyeabor? compilation. In fact after you purchase this just go right to it, Poor Boy. What a wonderful track. We did ask Onyeabor about this one after it came back from being mastered and it blew us away, he didn't remember it, hah.

Onyeabor, William : Crashes in Love (Original Version)
Available for the first time as individual vinyl LP. Crashes in Love was the first album Onyeabor released in 1977. He actually released it twice. As with most things Onyeabor the story is a little vague, but it seems he needed to repress the album and had lost the parts. At least that is the story we heard. This is the first version and is what we call the 'acoustic' version. The later version has somewhat different sounding tracks of different lengths that have electronic instruments on them as well. That is William Onyeabor on the sax by the way, we have no idea what else he played. Some of these songs you have heard before on our compilation and some will be new to you. Original release 1977.

Available for the first time as individual vinyl LP. Hypertension is the one album that doesn't have any tracks on the Who Is William Onyeabor compilation. Frankly I didn't really like this album at first, you might not either. But what I have found is that a lot of the Onyeabor material grows on you, that over time you become more and more open to it. Original release 1982.

William Onyeabor is a box set of eight (really nine) of the albums elusive Nigerian synth-funk pioneer William Onyeabor self-released between 1977 and 1985 - remastered and officially available for the first time. His music represents the epitome of the golden era of Nigerian funk, before he gave up a life in music to become a devout Christian. Luaka Bop released the critically acclaimed compilation WHO IS WILLIAM ONYEABOR'S in October of 2013, and has since seen the release of the documentary FANTASTIC MAN, which was fabricated around the myth of the musician, attempts to unearth the man behind the music, which is also now a full blown live show touring the world, paying tribute to the music of William Onyeabor featuring a supergroup of Damon Albarn, David Byrne, Kele Okereke from Bloc Party, Alexis Taylor from Hot Chip, the Lijadu Sisters, Money Mark, Pat Mahoney and Sinkane. to this day, William Onyeabor has not spoken about his music in one single interview.
